HOMEWORK: Everyone figure out where the hell the hammer ring is…. The last time I was at Weaver, I could not find it without some help from some friendly fellow throwers.
My “must watch” events for this year are Men’s disc and Women’s hammer. Men’s disc due to what I think will be a GREAT competition (see below), and Women’s hammer for the WOW factor in watching Ratcliffe shatter records. There is 0 reason to not come watch, as Women’s hammer is the first, and only, event at 10AM on Saturday from the looks of the schedule.
Men’s shot: As always, Mozia of Cornell is the overwhelming favorite. We will see if he can overcome the issues he seemed to have indoors this year. Last year, he threw an outdoor PR at Heps as I recall, so we will see what happens. Harvard takes tons of points in this event like last year. They have four guys (Brode, Liokumovich, Glauser & Brucker) who can all throw 54+, and all PR’d at last year’s outdoor Heps. Look for lots of crimson on the podium here. From there, my outside favorites for points are Brenza of Penn (he has the best chance at knocking out anyone from Harvard), Filiano of Dartmouth, Rushton of Princeton, and Clavette of Brown. Cornell needs the 10 from Mozia, and Princeton will hope he throws poorly again and that Rushton can pick up a point or two.
Women’s shot: Imbessi of Cornell is the favorite, her outdoor performances have not been as solid as her indoor performances so far this year, but look for her to set the standard. Darpolar (Brown) and Piccialo (Penn) could both throw far enough to beat her if they have good days and she has an off day. Look for 50 to win, 47-48 for second, and 44-46 for everything else. The points in women’s shot are actually pretty well spread out. Berg of Dartmouth looking strong, could challenge for a top three finish, as well as Salander of Harvard if she follows suit from indoors and does individual events. A whole slew of ladies in the 44-43 range, any of them could be a factor in the second half of the points here. Cornell, like the men, needs Imbessi’s 10 points to stay in it. Harvard will look to score upwards of 12 points with Salander, Watt and Johnson; this event will be key for them. A big goose-egg for Columbia.
Men’s Disc: HOLY TUESDAY IN ITHACA BATMAN! I was taking another look at the lists tonight, and Mozia breaks off a big one at Ithaca College. Not sure why he competed there since Penn Relays is just around the corner, but whatever works, right? Now number 3 (or tied for 2 depending on the metric conversion) all time in Heps, number 7 in the nation, and crushing his own school record, Mozia threw 59.91 meters, 196’7’’ tonight!! WOW! Ok, all that aside, he is FAR from a lock for the disc title. Mattis of Penn will give him all the fight he can muster. It will be a slug-fest of the finest proportions... I think I might need popcorn. Mattis has been in a bit of a slump lately, and Mozia is not exactly the most consistent thrower, so anything can happen, including an upset by Clavette of Brown. Talk about out of the blue for me. 187’2’’?!?! That looks like a 25 foot increase from last year, and although he has not been able to produce it again, you cannot count him out. PREDICTION: Mozia or Mattis at 60+ meters for the win, with the other right behind. Clavette battling for third with Levine of Yale, last year’s champion, with the last couple spots going to Harvard guys. Cornell hopes Mozia can pick up some much needed 10 points, Princeton hopes he does not.
Women’s Disc: Craker of Brown is my favorite. She is super consistent, and has been for many years now. I was worried a new coach might throw off her game, but there does not seem to be any stopping her. Not too far behind is Brown frosh Darpolar, who, like in the shot, has an outside chance at scoring well. She looks inconsistent, so she will need to bring the a-game for Heps weekend. I was surprised to see Imbessi suddenly in the mix here as well. She picks up some MUCH needed points for Cornell. Watt of Harvard of to a slow start this year. She will need to pick-up the pace to get back in the mix to defend her title, as Buhr of Brown (back after a year off) and Berg of Dartmouth will all be pushing for top spots. While I think Craker is a lock for the win, every other spot will be tightly contested. Brown will look to dominate and take the majority of the points, while Cornell will hope to pick up at least 6, and Harvard hopes Watt can bring in 6 or more as well. Another blank for Columbia in my opinion. Look for at least 150 feet to even place, 165+ to seal the win.
Men’s Hammer: This has been a tough one to nail down. With slow starts from some usual powerhouses, and a surprising early leader, this one is a toughie. Servino of Dartmouth looks really consistent at low 190’s, but Glauser of Harvard has thrown nearly 200 feet, and Fiedler of Cornell has come close to that as well. Glauser had a slow start, but seems to be picking up steam as the season rolls, and if he has another performance similar to indoor Heps, look for a big throw at outdoors. If not, look for Servino to win. A whole slew of guys in the mid to low 180’s, look for at least high 170’s to score. Team points in this one are going to be a BIG factor. Fiedler could pick up some major points if he throws well and others do not, and Cornell has two guys at numbers 7 and 8; Mozia and Rhodes. Mozia sneaked in last year and grabbed some points in the hammer he was not expected to get, so it could happen again, while Rhodes has struggled with the hammer in comparison to his indoor season and the weight. Outside shot at lots of points (like 12 or 14), but more likely would 6 for Cornell. 0 for Princeton.
Women’s Hammer: WOOO RATCLIFFE! From what many coaches were saying at indoor Heps, this was where she was REALLY going to shine, and I think we might be able to see her blaze into Heps history. Easy lock for the win in my opinion, I am hoping for 230 feet! Craker has been pushing hard, but I just don’t see her getting that far with the time left, but a solid bet for second. Ekechukwu of Harvard (2013 weight champ) will look to try and score some more points for her team, but will be hard-pressed to catch Craker. Columbia picks up their first points in the throws from Okwara, with the final couple spots being battled for in the mid to upper 160’s. Cornell’s first gap in scoring, Columbia picks up 4, Harvard 6 or 7.
Men’s Jav: Well, not a ton happening here this year. I don’t see Sullivan of Harvard anywhere, and Robbins’ (Cornell) closest comp so far is 15 feet back in Ingram of Penn. Mid 190’s to score, over 200 for the top places, and 220 to lock the win. Another solid 10 points for Cornell (assuming Robbins is throwing, only one mark this season), with Princeton possibly picking up some much needed points (3-4). *yawn*
Women’s Jav: This one will be MUCH closer than the men. If everyone on the list competes, there will be three separate Heps champs in one event. Penn starting to flex some muscle here, with 4 of the top 7 spots, 3 of which are freshmen. Cornell will again look to score a good chunk of points with Imbessi, Dombrowski and Reid. Harvard also has a stake here, with 2011 champion Meyer bringing a possible threat. 2012 champ Al-Hassan of Brown looks to be struggling so far this year, but Jav can surprise even the most wizened of coaches. No clear favorite for me, as Jav can be a fickle mistress, but I am going to say the list as it stands now, is not the clearest picture of what is likely. I really think we will see a veteran as the champ (Al-Hassan, Meyer or Imbessi), with a mish-mash for the remaining spots. 155 to win, low 150’s from the other champs, and the last couple spots rounded out in the mid to low 140’s. Cornell does not score as many as they hope (6-10), Harvard hoping for 6-10, and Columbia, unluckily, another 0 point event. On proof-read (yeah, I proof this crap), does anyone know about Salander of Harvard and the Jav? I only see the one time throwing it in a multi this year, and am wondering if that was an off day since she DNF’d elsewhere. That could be a big upset factor for Harvard.
