DS has developed the two African refuges into very good runners. They did not have any support from their governments.
The two "African refuges" were very good runners before Smith poached them, with 16th and 27th place finishes at NCAA's as freshmen for Auburn and Western Kentucky, respectively. Or are you referring to different "African refuges"? With Oklahoma State and Dave Smith, it's hard to keep track. Smith is a humanitarian, after all.
Keep posting, man. Your stuff is gold.

Kipchurir was not a refuge, so once again you have your facts wrong. Say your sorry.
GO to letsrun home page and find out who the refuges were before you slam me with wrong info.

Well deserved win.
Went out and executed and scored under 100 points.
As Florida State saw there isn't much room for error at the NCAA championships.
That's 3 of the last 4 titles for Oklahoma State.
The Cowboys deserve some props for winning the title.
All he is is a travel agent.
No one in the USA/NCAA respects this approach.
Think about it.
If Oregon brought in a hoard of Kenyans/older foreign runners...the hell that would erupt on this board.

Wisco's#1 is from Canada.
Yes, but that is just one of the far-north counties for Wisconsin.
However, I in no way, mean to imply that OSU did not do a very good job this year, and 1/1/2/1 is a pretty good result. Did anyone score on all of those teams? Ahmed was a 4-time AA, and those were all pretty high finishes as well.
Since 1999 Wisconsin has finished 5, 5, 2, 2, 2, 1, 2, 5, 4, 7, 3, 1, 2.
14 years where the only finish below 5 was 7th and nine times on the podium.
Some of these posts are very concerning. While I think it is wonderful that foreign athletes get the opportunity to come to the U.S. and get a free education, the argument does not reflect heavily on the Oklahoma State team.
Girma Mecheso: U.S. citizen
Joe Manilafasha: U.S. citizen
Kirubel Erassa: U.S. citizen
Fabian Clarkson: U.S. citizen (has dual citizenship with Germany)
Shane Moskowitz: U.S. citizen
5 of Oklahoma State's top 7 are U.S. citizens. How is it relevant that some of them are immigrants? A few of these posts have quite racist undertones.
Regardless of place of birth, if you track the progress of the OSU athletes, most of them have shown steady progress during their time at OSU. If this isn't development, I don't know what is. Congratulations to Dave Smith and the Oklahoma State Cowboys on another fantastic season.

Looks like he widened his talent by building a pipeline that tapped into foreigners, like Jumbo Elliot and John McDonnell. And Ron Warhurst with Canadiens. Nothing wrong with that, if that limits scholarships to American born kids than so be it. Run 1:50 4:07 8:45 you can find a nice scholarship some where. Doesn't make much sense to pay money to 18 year olds that aren't at that level.
I'm impressed with OSU I guess. Do they focus all or most of their scholarships towards XC and not track? If they are cool, but it lessens their greatness versus schools that have very strong track programs as well as XC that spreads out precious funds to get athletes other than 5k/10k runners.
Girma was in a situation he did not like at Auburn with Coach Watson leaving for UNC and Coach Carroll coming in.
Coach Smith at OSU bailed him out. He did not poach Girma. It was a last resort but one that turned out beneficial for all.
Clarkson's father is British.Germany does not allow dual citizenship after the age of 18.

OSU's first four are All America, though none were born in US.
Their fifth man is not All America, but is US born.

Very well written. I agreed with on the racist undertones. Over the last 40 years I have been following this sport, the complaints are only for the black runners.
If you go down each roster in the NCAA you find many "white" non Americans. There is never a complaint about them.
Great execution. And I'm with the perspective of not over-crediting Smith on this. When he wins a title without a)transfers, b)questionable 6th year eligibility, or c)foreign athletes (this year he had all 3), then he will deserve more props.
People on here complain about everything and anything. Anybody notice?
Oklahoma State actually recruited a top shelf hammer thrower last year. Plus they are bringing in 3 or 4 elite 800-1500 runners in the 2013 class. Trying to build more of a complete program.
WCE, HSI, SMTC have hundreds of Outdoor and Olympic medals. All three are located in Los Angeles, the undisputed Track and Field Capitol of the World with the IAAF Outdoor and Olympic medals to show for it.
o shut up, everyone is pissed that the majority of OKST key contributers were not U.S. born, they're not racist (Tom Farrell included)
OK ST= International Champs
Wisco= National Champs
One of the main reasons OSU concentrates so much of their scholarship money on cross country is because of Title IX. Ten years ago, their men's track team didn't have any scholarships to offer, and their track team was basically XC athletes and walk-ons in two or three non-distance events. Its not clear to me what the scholarship situation is now, but I would be surprised if it was much different (with a few exceptions), even with the recent success of the men's xc team and the Boone Pickens money. The weight of OSU's men's athletics scholarships are concentrated in football and their championship wrestling program. The women's team has more money for this reason. Not Dave Smith's fault. What he's done with the program in the last few years is quite remarkable.
Title 9 doesn't have anything to do with Okla State's lack of men's track scholarships. They have 12.6 to offer just like everyone else. They have obviously focused their scholarship efforts on the distance runners over the past few years. Evidently they are looking to build more of a complete team, according to some posters above. Would love to see that being a Cowboy fan. Go Pokes!
Like you, complaining about the complainers.
