Sounds to me like Granny needs to pick herself up by her bootstraps and get a job. Or maybe her husband should have done a better job of preparing her for life on her own.

@ the OP: According to
http://www.worldwealthcalculator.org, you are in the top .1% of the world in terms of income. You are rich. Count your blessings, and accept where you have overspent. Each of your children did not need you to buy them a car and pay their insurance. Living in America does not mean that we are entitled to everything we want. Be thankful that you live in a country where one of your biggest worries is a 3% tax increase.
According to that site, you need less than 133k to be in the top .1%. The smallest percentage they give is .1%, but he is nearly double the income cutoff to make it in. Odds are good he's in the top .01%.

Get married, have children, and come back on here and say this exact sentence. You can't.
Pffft. You should try being a double income, no kid, no mortgage couple. Talk about getting SCREWED by the tax code.
Your adjusted gross income is over $250,000?
pay the taxes, I refuse to cry for you.

Ha, I was a double income, no kid, no mortgage couple for 3 years!!
Believe me I know!
I'll ask again...can someone argue with this? Seems unfair to me...

This guy gets it.
The rest of you are completely unqualified to comment unless you actually have a job, several dependents, a home, etc. You also need to educate yourselves about how different the cost of living is throughout the country.
If you going to stay in the US (not forever but a few years until we all have to leave ) the best place is Texas. We need more producers like you here. Overseas, look at Chile, Carribean islands, Singapore, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand. Good luck - get out of CA ASAP and start making your overseas plans concrete. You have less time than you think.
Most ignorant post of the year.
"The rich won't be hurt. They are smarter than you. That is why they are rich and you are not."
Only an idiot could post something like that.
Paris Hilton is smarter than 99.9999999% of people ? Shaq O'neal is smarter than 99.9999999? Fifty Cent is smarter than 99.9999999999% of people? The Walton heirs are smarter than 99.999999999999999999999999% of people? Donald Trump is smarter than 99.99999999999999% of people? GW Bush is smarter than 99.999999999999999% of people? Ryan Locthe is smarter than 99.99999999999% of people?
Need I go on???
People are rich for LOTS of reasons. Being smart is occasionally one of those reasons, but very often intelligence has NOTHING to do with them being rich.
Maybe you are rich and we can add you to the list of rich people who really aren't too bright.
your deductions mean that you are not going to be affected by this, not that there would be that significant a difference by this tiny increase in taxes back to the clinton era: the rich did very well then. five cars is insane, however.
I'm so sick of hearing this Romney-like whining about the "job creators", etc., - the sad burdened rich people and all the judgments he/they make about working class people and the supposed "takers" in this country. Tens of millions of us voted for Obama, we pay taxes too. I don't "take" from the government. I have kids, too, but not 5 cars. Often bike to work, actually. I'm happy you make a lot of money, but am not jealous of what you have, nor do I want what you have.
You make so many judgments of people who make less money than you. Try raising your kids on $50K a year, buddy.
One result of this election was to show the "reality bubble" that conservatives live in. I find it hard to believe that you mix with or understand the realities of people who exist with 20% of your income. Obamacare - finally the poor and people who can't get medical insurance will have access to medical care. Yeah, I bet that gets you mad. Go to church much?
Work hard? So do I. So do people that do landscaping for the rich whiners in this country and the workers that wash the sheets and towels in the hotels you stay in. Try understanding how the 99% live, OK? And if you can't take any more - have a nice time living in.....ah, where are you going?
Thanks for answering the question.Oh wait...
That was such a great story you told though. I enjoyed the rant. Even if he is a millionaire, why should he be paying more in taxes than bringing in? Also, I realize poor people need healthcare, but why should another tax increase be put on the rich to support healthcare for everyone? I'm not looking for an ethical reason of why...I'm looking for a real reason why it's fair?
I usually do not use the word "rich" but was trying to use common language. We have a different definition of rich. I prefer "producers". I don't like many of the people you named but none of them are moochers. None of them are asking me to pay their bills. None of them are asking me to provide their needs or live at their expense. Many of the people you named had to develop their talents even if I am not their fans. By the way, Trump is smarter. That was a bad one to try to make a point with. He built an empire from nothing. I hope you set aside envy and achieve your dreams. The people you named have all done that so they are smarter than the people who have not. What is holding you back?

Why is this even a discussion? We already have government boondoggle called Medicaid that covers every poor person in the US. They are already covered!
So far from this thread I've learned that I'm dumb, lazy, and jealous and I cannot comment on someone's situation because I chose to not have 3 kids, and to not take a job in a city with a high cost of living, and to not purchase a condo in the upscale part of said city, and to encourage my wife to keep working after we had kids, and to not buy each of my kids a new car.

Ah! So you've learned to manage your money wisely!
I agree with the OP wrote:I guess we just grew up in different environments. My parents took care of college expenses, car insurance, etc. I understand both sides, but that's what I will do as well.
They never said go to U of I because it's $15k a year cheaper, instead make your own choice. Call it stupid, but I call that normal.
You are killing me. You talk about your parents never having much money and yet they made enough to send you and your siblings to what sound like fairly expensive schools. That is not normal. It may be normal for students of certain schools and kids of certain income brackets but it is certainly not normal across the board. Similarly some of my classmates had physician parents cut checks for their medical school tuition. Just because it happens doesn't mean it's normal, and just because they can afford it doesn't make it normal either.
FWIW, i'm currently in medical training and making next to nothing, particularly when you consider my liabilities (namely, massive student debt of 150k). Hopefully I'll make between 350k-450k some day soon. To be honest, I have no fvcking idea how I'm gonna spend it all. Lots of things being listed on here as basic necessities that seem like luxuries to me. $1000/month in car payments? Are you fvcking kidding me? Save up and pay cash for something you afford. It kills me when people list things like this as necessities.
the tax increase wouldn't apply to your first $250,000. be happy you're rich and quit wasting our time.
