Heard news this afternoon that if Sandy cuts power and transportation to many areas expect the race to be cancelled. Subways will need days to be inspect and get rebooted and police will be needed in hardhit areas.

It's not going to be cancelled.
Ferries and tunnels take 95 percent of the runners to the start.
None of the low-lying areas that are flooded are part of the course.
The city likes hosting the marathon.
Seems like a foregone conclusion that it's over.
How are all the out of town runners going to make it there with airport closed and thousands of flights cancelled? It could take a week or 10 days for the transportation systems to be back online and through the backlog.
David Monti will be giving us an update soon

KARMA is a bitch
The event will be cancelled and Mary Wittenberg wont know how to handle it because she is very imcompetant.
Do you think Mary will pout and act like a 6 year old like she did when she lost the right to host the Olympic Trials? That was funny as hell.
The event will be great as always. Many will have difficulty getting to the Staten Island Ferry Terminal though. Especially from NJ if the PATH train is not able to stop at the WTC. This will be a slightly smaller version of the marathon as there will be people who have flights delayed and therefore cancel their entry. Possibly out of the 60,000 bibs sold there will be 40,000 that make it to the start.

What a load of crap. They didn't cancel Boston five years ago when the start was underwater the night before the Patriot Day, and they won't cancel New York, days after this storm has rolled through.

Many of the tunnels were flooded and Staten Island, Queens, and Brooklyn had a lot of damage.
I'm ready to run this marathon on Sunday, but from all of the damage I've been reading about, I just don't see how they can pull this off. On the other hand, if there is one city in the world that could do this, it's NYC. I'd expect a firm decision later today after Mary has communicated with the mayor's office/police/FEMA etc.

You're a moron. How do you think most of those people get TO the ferries?
Doubt it will be cancelled, but the MTA being out is going to be a huge deal.
They NEED to make a decision today. Way too many people (20,000 international) coming in from all over the world for it. People need a few days notice to be able to cancel flights/hotels.
Are airports opened yet? Travelers may not have to worry about cancelling their flights as the airlines will probably do it for them.
Friend of mine in the mayor's office just texted the mayor said, "There is no way in hell we are able to host the marathon in 5 days!" when asked by someone. Friend saying the pressing needs of police elsewhere than the needed support for the marathon as well as to get electricity and transportation system up which is going to take 2-3 more days at best and subways goal is for partial lines running by Monday of next week but 600 miles to inspect and all areas suffered mild to heavy flooding, much of it salt water.

Bloomberg just announced the issue will be re-addressed in the morning meeting(weds) so as of this minute it is on and by inference they(or perhaps just Bloomberg himself) is leaning to letting it go on.

Ok , so the real deals are being cut behind the scenes on who is going to pay for what and how are they going to manpower away from the clean up efforts.
Cops love the marathon as its easy overtime money with not much effort.
