Too lazy to give your own opinion?
Sounds good to me. Carry one, kids.
Wow, this is actually very interesting.
Big improvement by Cain on Saturday, 28 seconds faster than last year. Hopefully she can make a run at the NXN title against Baxter, Neale, and the likes.
My first thought is-- is this really any different than a gifted pianist moving from their local high school or teacher to a conservatory?
Point being, given her obvious talent, and local running community, much like Alberto himself when he ran with GBTC while in H.S., she needs to seek a different level of coaching.
Couple this with a possible future growth spurt...I mean, I guess she could stay elfin forever but the liklihood his that her body will change in the not too distant future, a coach who could take a more long term view makes alot of sense.
That being said...this is now the second HS girl over the past two years who is working outside the system. Cayla Hatton, now of Stanford, last year and now Cain.

She is 16. Most girls get their speed wrecking growth spurt when they hit puberty. I think she is safely going to be elfin for her professional running career.
And she damn well better be getting pro coaching if she is going to be competitive internationally. If I was her high school track/CC coach, I would be making the calls to pro coaches for her.
I think the way Salazar brought Rupp up out of high school was perfecto - If I were pere Cain, I would like my child to have a Rupp like experience for the next 10 years with Salazar.
So all good with me.

Cayla Hatton is a different case as she attended Phillips Andover, so she would have been "outside the system" no matter what since the school is not part of the NFHS.
Can high school runners run college XC races as unattached runners or is that not allowed?
yes, they can. In fact, in some states it's easier for a kid who doesn't attend a gov't skool to enter a college race & run unattached than it is to run in a HS Invitational..
She didn't even run in the New England Prep School meets....
Forget about NFHS
poor poor girl...
Didn't salazar have some other girl back when Rupp was still in high school that he was trying to put on the "Rupp Plan" too? Rumor has it she went back to soccer, or was a head case or something.

she had previous problems with eating disorders anorexia/bulimia, so salazar had her stay at his house to monitor her, but she would still refuse to eat and/or throw up what she ate, so salazar sent her back home and told the family she should forget running as her health was more important.
i dont know if this is exact, but it is close.

As per NYS rules, you must train with your team to be eligible to compete. How can Mary be running with a Bronxville uniform?
Wow very interesting.
I think we are going to see Mary Cain follow the same rout as Allyson Felix. Nike will sign her right after high school and they will agree to pay for her college tuition. Probably at Oregon because that's where Alberto is. She obviously will not compete for Oregon in the NCAA's because she will already be a Nike sponsored athlete coached by Alberto.
Sounds like a damn good gig...can't think of anyone besides Felix who has done this. Maybe avoiding the entire NCAA system will be good for her in the long run. For a 1500 runner, I don't think college XC will be of great benefit to her...but that's a different discussion.
I know we said this about Hasay but I honestly think she has the potential to be a MEDAL contender by 2016. 4:11 as a sophomore in high school!! That converts to a 4:30 mile which is a good sophomore boy time!! Who knows how much she will continue to improve, it's a crap shoot. That's why it's pretty understandable for her to be considering a different rout than other elite girls.

Typical, lets just have rules to hold kids back. No wonder there are so few Rupp-type runners in the US these days.
Good thing she isn't just chasing the boys in workouts now - short-term gain which too often has dire consequences down the road.
She is a massive talent who needs professional coaching (even if it is Alberto). Given how poorly the women did in the Olympics beyond the sprints (oh thats right everyone else must be doping), maybe she should bypass the NCAA altogether. She and Ajee Wilson are the hope of future medals (Hasay isn't even the best on her College team anymore, and should certainly have been closer to 4.00 by now). The NCAA should be subservient to goals of becoming the best in the world - that should be the expectation of ALL Americans (HS and College coaches under "real" coaches, if the USATF wasn't such a rinky-dink organization as a NGB). Anything less is sacrificing the gift.
Mr Salazar was visiting the Cain's in the week before the Chicago Marathon with the plan to have her move to Portland, move into the Salazar house, attend Central Catholic and work in a long term like Rupp,
This is very intersting. The boy's coach, Ed Stickles, ran for Jack Daniels at Cortland, so is only one degree of separation from an amazing resource.
It would also be interesting to know what she's doing now for training, and why that's better than working with experienced coaches, who have clearly helped her get to be one of the best HS girls of all-time.
Salazar is clearly a great resource, but I wonder what she thinks is currently missing. I hope it's not a "grass is always greener on the other side".
Regardless, I hope it all works out for the best for her. On kind of a seperate note, I don't think there's any reason she couldn't sign with NIKE (or anyone else), as long as she doesn't mind giving up her HS/ College eligibility.
She clearly has the ability to compete on the national/ international level, as a junior, so between XC and TF would have plenty of opportunities to compete.
