and pulled their funding to Mammoth. Obviously we did not provide enough photo ops.
Getting joggers to enter races has paid of handsomely for her. $500,000 is a lot of money to operate running club with a bunch of toadies.
Max Siegel makes the same salary.
Mary W has done more for the sport than anyone else, besides maybe Lananna. She easily trumps every higher-up at USATF in terms of influence on the sport and NYRR is quickly turning into a world-wide influencer of all things road running. Hate all you want, but she's earned her salary and her notoriety.
Self promotion anyone? wrote:

Thanks to her efforts the sport is being promoted. I would say she has done a pretty good job and had a wonderful vision for the club...Yes, it has changed but mostly for the better....she deserves 500k
You have been gotten. It happened to me before too. She is the ultimate politician that is hated by her peers. When I was first out of college I thought the same as you do. I have since learned differently.

Psssst. She makes more than that when you total bonus compensation, deferred compensation and non-taxable benefits.

Done more for who? And at what cost?
Elites love her for the money. She has become rich, but how has the sport improved? Jacking fees so joggers can pay the bills is improving the sport?
She's a rainmaker. She makes a fortune for the NYRR. Her salary is a bargain.

There's going to be one domestic marathon on live, national US television this year: The New York Marathon. It's the first time New York will have a live, nationwide broadcast since 1993. The NYRR didn't need to join WMM and their prize scheme. They don't need to offer so much prize and appearance money at the marathon, and they don't need to put money into elite fields for the half marathon, their pre-marathon 5km or the 5th Avenue Mile. They don't have to bid for the World Cross Country and World Half Marathon Championships or the Olympic Trials. They don't have to pay for pacemakers for qualifying meets in California in helping US distance runners achieve the standards for the US and World Championships. But they've done all that. I see no way that US distance running is worse off now than it was six years ago because of the leadership at NYRR.
If there was a farting contest in Central park, you could find someone to televise it because it's in NY.
It will be the usual few minutes on the elites, and the rest human interest stories of people running for charity and verbal BJs for the tourism industry.
You were probably one of the people saying there would be a million people watching the Olympic trials there.
With John Anderson and Tim Hutchings on the commentary crew, and Juli Benson and Ed Eyestone on the course, I'm sure this is going to have plenty of serious race coverage. Would you rather it not be on live, national television?
Let us know how your farting contest goes. I don't know that I'll be able to watch on tv.
NYRR has definitely changed since Mary Wittenberg took over. Runners are not happy with the increased race fees (NYC Marathon included), especially those unemployed. NYRR has lost their focus, more on fund/charity raising than simply running races. The December 18 Jingle Bell Jog 4M fee is $40 (no discounts) and proceeds go to NYRR's Youth Program. This is wrong; a race should be a race and not forced donation. We should donate to charities we want and not for others' ulterior motives to look good! Why can't a race be just a race? The NYRR Foundation office at West 56th Street is very impressive and not too many folks know about this location.
The NYC Marathon is about how many out-of-towners you can get and their money. I ran the marathon when there were 35,500 particapants and this was a good number. Now 47,500+ and way too many. For those who couldn't get in the NYC Marathon, the Brooklyn Marathon is scheduled for November 18, 2012 and is a Boston Qualifier.
Wow, that was a quick response. Must be your shift to monitor the boards.
I haven't seen anyone from the NYRR jump to someones defense that fast since Toby Tansers start position was questioned.
Yes, a half mil puts her in the top 2%, but she can go to Goldman Sachs and make 5 times that. Besides, if she made less the co-op board where she lives would start to worry, and kids who know her kids are not used to socializing with lowlifes.
What Mary W. did was expanding the field, not the quality. If she was concerned about Quality, she would have added some mudder/obstacle challenges. Anyone can run a 5/10k. It's not an achievement.

If she was partner level at a big NY law firm by now, she would be making 2-3 mil a year with more built up in pension and firm equity for a very, very nice retirement at 62. $500k plus the other perks is middle class for Manhattan.
