I posted here several days ago, posing a question regarding avascular necrosis to the 2nd metatarsal heads of both of my feet. After a visit to a very competent podiatrist (who frequently works with athletes), I was informed that the culprit for my of my running injuries of late has been Hallux Rigidus.
Unfortunately for me, the Doctor said he believes surgery may be the only option, as he would characterize the condition as being Stage III-IV and, if done, his estimation based off initial Xrays and in-office tests is that I have a "roughly 50/50 chance of requiring fusion of the toe to the joint." That, quite literally, would be a "nail in the coffin" for my running career, as fusion would mean the joint would be permanently immovable. He was very frank with me and said that, "You could still cycle, you could still swim, but if fusion is needed, you will be done running for good."
To a person in their mid-20's who has been at it for over a decade and still has plenty of great running years left in them, that is a scary outlook. I'm not looking for anyone to sugar-coat it, etc., but I am curious if anyone out there has any experience with this type of injury and, if so, what was the end result? Did you find non-operative measures such as custom orthotics to be your "magic answer" and save you from requiring career-ending surgery?
Current plan of action is to wear orthotics for 2-3 months (I was molded yesterday and will have them in 3-4 weeks). If I have exhibited little to no pain during this time and the joint has not degenerated further, I can continue ahead cautiously with periodic checkups to ensure I am not destroying my foot. If, however, after 2-3 months of orthotics use my foot is in more or less the same condition, I will have the surgery. Removing bone spurs and re-shaping the joint alone would put me out of running for ~6 months (no activity at all for 4-8 weeks, followed by aqua-jogging/cycling and eventually easing back into running), which looks a whole lot better than zero running... ever.
I guess I'm just looking for the advice/input of someone who's experienced similar issues and what your end result of the injury proved to be...
Thanks!
