I was kind of curious as to how fast untrained recruits sometimes run the 3 mile pt in bootcamp. To get a perfect score, they need to hit 18:00, but it wouldn't surprise me if some tough SOB busted out a 15:30 or something.

None of them are untrained are they? They do lots of training in bootcamp
Marines are not all that people make them to be I have beat several of them.
The Pentagon uses Hollywood movies to create propaganda, when in fact women and gays are in basic training with the straight men in the Army, Air Forces, Coast Guards, and Navy. None of the cornucopia of SWAT units in the Pentagon and police department are permitted to perform sans aircraft carriers, AWACS, stealth fighter jets, steath helicopters, lawyers, Harvard degreed risk managers, ...

i completed recruit training at parris island in 1995. the fastest i ran a 3 mile for the pft was 17:15, and that was coughing up lung cookies the whole time because i spent half the previous day breathing in bleach fumes while being forced to clean the di hut's head. there were quite a few recruits in front of me. there was some stud in another platoon in my company who finsihed the 3 mile first in 15:30. there also was an 'ironman' competition, won by completing the most perfect PFTs consecutively. A perfect PFT then was 20 dead-hang pull-ups, 80 sit-ups (not the current 100 crunches), and 18:00 3-mile run. The winner completed this 6 times in a row.
Not sure about in boot camp, but I knew some Marines who have done sub-15. They're big anomalies though, 18:00 is a dream for most Marines. Mostly because they hate running and never do any serious training.
only recruits that were runners in HS will run under 18 min. most recruits that were not runners but good athletes will run between 19 and 21 min.
i remember hearing about a few Naval academy guys running sub 15:00 at OCS, but they were obviously trained. untrained officer candidates were between 18 and 20 min with a dozen or so under 18 (for a typical company of 250 or so)
great

one of my best friends who spent 5 years in the marine corps said he ran 20:00 as his best, but there were dudes who ran in the 15:00s who weren't hardcore runners like the folks over at LRC.
I have a Marine friend who does a lot of road races. He's in about 17:30 shape for 5K so probably about 17 for 3 miles. He isn't jacked, but I'm sure he could bang out 20 pull ups without too much trouble.

what this guy said. i ran 17:00 on the dot in boot camp and the next guy was 1:06 behind me. i lost a decent amount of aerobic shape while in boot camp(i was running 16:45 5k's before i joined). there are not too many runner types in the military as it is. didn't kenny cormier join the marines back in 06 or something like that?
Yeah Cormier is in. I don't know the record but I bet he was darn close if he tried.
I had a buddy who was a pretty decent D1 runner. I believe he was top 150 at nationals. So not amazing per say, but darn good. He enlisted but then didn't end up going, I know he showed up to one DEP workout when he was still sort of running and ran like 9:10 just messing around.
Safe to say the recruiters freaked out. Broke their hearts when he didn't ship.
The 9:10 was for a two mile run...obviously....
I ran 14:05 for 3 miles during OCS at Quantico. The base record was just over 15 at the time. My gunny knew how fast I had run before and got in my face telling me not to sandbag. Hadn't had more then 2 hours of sleep each night for the week prior.
I ran only 18 something for my final PFT. I was 16 and smoked Marlboros then. It took me 7 months to get out of boot camp. I was in the hospital for 2 months after the DI broke my wrist and my body and face were swelled up from hits in Stage I. My left thumb was placed in the M-14 chamber and slammed shut, it swelled up bad. Then in my 2nd platoon, I qualed, went as far as Stage 3, and the Senior DI called me a gook (I look Native American but am not), hit me in the ribs and face 15 times, then sent me back to Stage I. In the 3nd platoon, on M&M duty, I didn't clean up properly, then the DI threw me so hard I passed out. One guy died after jumped from the 3rd floor. The DI told me I'm going to NTC (the Navy). The Lt asked me if I wanted to be a "squid", and I said no, my Dad would kill me, so he let me stay with the platoon. I finally grew up by then and finished. My Mom was so worried I was going to be killed. I was so mad I didn't invite them to the graduation ceremony at the MCRD Auditorium. If you ever ran the RnR San Diego Marathon youv'e seen the facilities I'm talking about at MCRD.
Try running 3 miles every morning for 80 days after getting punched, thrown, and choked out by 4 Marine Drill Instructors each who have personally tortured and beaten to death dozens of Islamo Fascists with their bare hands and who were in their pre-18 year old days were Golden Glove boxers, Tae Kwan Do experts, Judo experts, high school Wrestling Champs, Karate experts, etc. By the time the PT test is given at Stage I the average recruit has been baited and hazed into being a total mental zombie, physically shell shocked, and a mechanical robot unable to think any subject matters without verbal permission from his DIs.
Somewhere I heard that the ranger requirement was 40 minutes for 5 miles. That is pretty much the only army requirement that I could easily handle and actually enjoy. The army sounds like a miserable place although I am thankful there are people who are willing to join. I think I would escape to Canada if 33-year-old women were ever drafted.
I know a guy who went into the SEALS after running collegiality. He ran somewhere between 15:10-15:15 if I recall correctly. His prs were 14:1x. He said it was tough with the pants and above ankle (and heavy) boots that were required for wear.
Somewhere in the high-14 min to low-15 min range I'm sure. My company high was 17:05, I ran a 17:28 and ran 4th place on that particular PFT. I have since run 16:30 for the PFT. Getting in some real running and some tempo/interval training helps. If I could criticize the PT regimen at MCRD, it would be that there isn't enough running/actual PT, and too much emphasis on drill.
You have to remember that when guys do this at the end of something like OCS, it is after 10 miserable miserable weeks. I'm not sure if they have boots on for it, but I imagine its not ideal circumstances.
One of my friends (153 800 runner) ran in the 15s for the 3 mile run during his fitness test. Then would get berated by the drill guys if he wasn't improving every time, even though he was 2 minutes ahead of anyone else.
Only 20% make it out of OCS. Only 30% make it out of MCRD. Some people are so ashamed they go to their grave w/o ever telling others they wimped out of the Marines.
Corey Smith (Georgetown '01, think he was AA) has been in the Marines since a few years after school (did OCS). I'd be surprised if he didn't have the record. I vaguely remember him talking about it, but my memory is impaired by vast amounts of alcohol consumed over the years.
