Approximately 3 years ago, I was on relatively high dose of Prednisone following a surgery for a 6 week period (if memory serves correctly, the Doctor had me on 60 mg/day the first week, 50 mg/day the 2nd week, 40 mg/day 3rd, 4th=30mg/day, 5th=20mg/day, 6th=10mg/day). About two months after this prolonged usage of Prednisone, I was diagnosed with Avascular Necrosis of the second metatarsal head in my foot while in the middle of a marathon build-up.
The following years have been rather rocky, as I was previously nearly injury-free and able to consistently train for years on end. The I had 4 weeks of no activity whatsoever, followed by another 8 weeks of low impact activity (aqua jogging, etc), followed by a good 8 weeks just to build up to ~60 mpw, and then in the year that followed I tried to slowly work my mileage back up to a decent range (80-100 mpw). In recent weeks, finally being able to get in decent mileage/workouts for the first time in a long time (and contemplating preparing for a marathon for the first time in a long time), I have been experiencing pain in the region again and am going to see a Podiatrist (a different one this time, as I was not satisfied with the lack of an agressive approach by my previous).
I am wondering if anyone out there who has had this condition can fill me in on their succes and/or horror stories involving the likelihood of returning to consistent training? Are "alternative" measures (orthotics, physical therapy, etc.) possible means to avoid surgery, which, if performed, would make it very unlikely that I would be able to return to my old self?
I'm looking to do the right thing this time and catch the issue before it progresses to much worse than it could be, but even more so, I suppose I am looking for a silver lining in the cloud...
Thanks for any information anyone can provide...
