I have a friend who I have beaten in every event from the 800 to the marathon...he has some very "veiny" legs and I have one small vein visible near my both of my shins. If you have us stand next to each other, nobody would guess that I am faster.

Oh :-( don't bash on George H! He has bad varicose veins. I think those are mostly inherited, but exacerbated by excessive exercise. (Luckily none of us do that ...) Anyway, last year or so George said he was going to get his leg repaired after he retired. So anytime now ...

People who do not store much fat subcutaneously tend to store more fat internally around vital organs (heart, liver, etc.). In the long run, people with this genetic fat distribution pattern have more issues with heart disease and other conditions related to having too much fat around their internal organs.
Do a ton of aerobic work.
