Looks like she ran 5:00 for a full mile last year as an 8th grader.

Wow, legit run. Of the 263 other runners, only 2 were within 84 seconds of her time.
She ran 5:01.90 for 1600 as an 8th grader.

Course was likely a bit short, as the runner up doesn't seem like a 17:07 XC runner.
Still, the 2nd place girl is a 4:53/10:59 girl. Not bad...one to watch for sure.
Why I love HS girls XC. Ya never know when the next phenom with no breasts will come onto the scene!! If she can ward off puberty for another 3 months she could be a Footlocker champ!
Sub-17 in a season opener would make her the best freshman ever -or the course is short, I prefer to suspect the latter.
Even if the course is a bit short, the run is still incredibly impressive. Congrats on a very impressive race Taylor!
The course is not short, it's been measured countless times this year and last year. It is just a fast course with a lot of competition, which will always lead to some fast results.
I'm excited by this bu also very scared that she's either A) been training at a high level for years thus not going to improve further or B) going to burn out
That's a crazy good time
Seriously? What does pubic hair have to do with running? I am so tired of people analyzing runners like they are not people. How would you feel if your 14 or 15 year old daughter was having people discuss her pubic hair on a running forum. Wow classy...
You mean like they discuss it in middle school health class? Oh, oh yea that's right, now calm down.

As freaky as I can get, it would probably turn me on.

Equality is an ongoing battle for women, due to so many idiots in the world.
To be honest, the records for men and women should be closer. Think about it, women have been doing competitive running a lot less time than men.
If anything, men are closer to stagnating time-wise while women have a lot more room for improvement.
I suspect that within the next 10 years, it will be common for girls to run mid 16's on courses that they usually would run mid-17s or slower on.
What were the times like last year at this same race?
Girls running fast times as freshmen is nothing new. I don't get excited till their JR SR year. Without getting into details, running a lot delays puberty/development and the times run as freshmen for distance events have no predictive value with regards to future improvement.

Wrongo. Look at pretty much all world records. The gaps aren't closing, they're opening. This holds for high school records in my state, too.
The meet was run by Big River Running Company and I was there to see the whole thing. It it were managed by Fleet Feet then I would agree that the course is short. The course is pretty flat with just 2 small hills that's why the times were fast. And tho whoever said the 2nd girl is not a 17:07 runner please see the link below.

Hannah Long (the 2nd place finisher in the Forest Park race this year) ran 17:47 in 2011 FL MW.
Hope that cleared up all the haters.
And here is the course map

Can you give an example of this "opening gap"? It seems to me that that the gap is either closing or it has remained constant. But not getting significantly bigger. How many world records have been set on both sides in the last 5 or 10 years?
