"I was also surprised to hear Ryan has run a sub-3 hour marathon. Add another interest group to the list of groups like Catholics, hunters and Miami of Ohio grads who are going to connect easily with this candidate."
O.K.
Interest groups who are going to connect easily with this candidate:
1. Catholics
2. Hunters
3. Miami of Ohio grads
4. Pathological liars
He'll now definitely have to do more work to improve his speed. This will take the kind of concerted effort that will leave him little if any time for politics. The increased mileage, chiropractic and massage treatments, track workouts, and nutrition consults he'd need to make his statement true will certainly preclude any other occupation. He has to get his priorities straight. His statement that he ran sub-3 is really a secret wish, and speaking it out loud is no doubt a Freudian slip. Now he must commit himself to realizing it. Goodbye running for VP. Hello serious running. I'm sure he'll be grateful for heeding my advice. Just trying to help here....

Looks like he rounded to the nearest 2-fifty-something.
So, 4:01. Hmmm, not only did he not run "2-fifty-something," but he didn't have the determination towards the end to at least break four hours.

1990 was before chip times. Grandmas probably had a decent sized field that year and it starts on a 2 lane road. So if Ryan started his watch when he crossed the starting line, he probably did break 4 hours.
I'm just saying, give him the benefit of the doubt on the minute. The hour is another story.

According to the New Yorker, Ryan has just "fessed up":

I loved this line:
"Also, people who run that quickly are generally neurotic about their times."
Touche! But please note that I apologized for the bragging, merely trying to establish some cred. And where is the insult? What do you call someone who treats breaking three as such an extraordinary achievement - unless you're 50 or so? In the aforementione Mission Bay race 35% of the field did it (49 of 141).
Paul Ryan is a Catholic and a Republican. He wants to destroy America with Mormon Bishop Romney.
The only reason there wasn't a communist revolution in the USA in 1930's is because of things like social security and medicare. They want to do away with these programs like they did away with the bank regulations put in place in the 1930's. During the Bush years without the bank regulations we ended up where we are now.
Vote for Mormon Bishop Romney and Paul Ryan. They'll make everything better.
It's funny how Republicans always talk about American values and how things use to be.
Well they're use to be good Union jobs that paid well enough so that the man could work and the woman could stay home with the kids.
Romney and friends blew up all the good paying jobs and sent them over seas. They prefer that you work for minimum wage.
What did Unions do? They created the weekend, child labor laws, safety in the work place.
People use to work 7 days a week. Get a half day off on Sundays to attend church. Your child would be missing a hand because they worked in a factory starting at 5 years old. People forget the sacrifices made by the men and women of America to get things the way they are now.
Republicans hate America and they hate the Constitution. The reason they hate it is because the Constitution give rights to the little people and everyone you know. Unless you make 10 million a year there is no reason to vote republican.
I'm converting to Mormon before we are forced to.
Actually, Ryan was the one who said he ran Grandma's in 1991. Looks like he got that one wrong too.
This whole story is awesome. Im so proud of letsrun!
I ran 2:53 just out of High School of of less than 50 miles a week in 1975. Am I a pu$sy? Hard to say. What is easy to say is this Ryan guy is a prevaricating sack.

Ancient Marathoner, you are still correct. Decent cross country fitness and many teenagers are breaking 3 no problem, at least in he old days!

He misspoke.
Going from 4:01 to "2:fifty-something" isn't misspeaking. Maybe if he's said "3:01" you could cut him slack on transposing a digit. Claiming a "2:fifty-something" is deliberately lying to puff himself up. Stay classy, Paul Ryan.
I don't know my best bowling score, but I know it sure as hell isn't 250 something.
While I certainly will NOT vote for Ryan, I cannot say I think this is a huge deal. He did fess up. BUT notice in the interview he says "I was fast when I was younger, yeah." Now I think most average folks think a sub three hour marathon is fast, and an over four hour marathon is slow. That part does bug me a bit.
I will still vote for him wrote:
At least he "fessed up", (doesn't make it right that he exaggerated his time ) ) unlike the current President who refuses to fess up to anything ...;)
Bottom line, you can't trust ANY politician!

Right, because we all remember when there were big changes to the banking regulations passed by Bush. Well, maybe not, since there were no changes to banking regulations under Bush. Banks were deregulated under Clinton. The act passed the Senate 90-8 and the House 362-57.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gramm%E2%80%93Leach%E2%80%93Bliley_ActThe surest sign of serial liars is when they lie about things that don't really matter. Like, say, lying about your marathon PR is when you're running for political office. Or like, say, when a president falls while riding his mountain bike on his ranch and claims it was due to muddy conditions from "the rain" that hadn't occurred for several weeks.

Then there was this on the RW comments:
"Paul Ryan ran a sub 3 hour marathon?? He must be Kenyan. Check his birth certificate!"

That 3:03 by the way, was hundreds of places from the front in a field of probably only about 1000 in 1983.
That same time in that same race would today land you in the top forty.
Marathons were shorter in the 80s. Something to do with the "accelerating universe." (Google it.)
Gunning for 2:50s, damn hitting that wall must have hurt.
I wonder if this is indicitave of the current race he's running.
