I'm taking gym this semester and I'm worried about how this could affect my training for cross country. 3-5 times per week, we do a 22 minute run. I realize this isn't much, but I'm wondering how this could affect my training. If I just jog the 22 minutes at about 9-10 minute pace, do you think this would be a helpful shakeout for my after-school practices? Gym class is 2 hours before my practice starts, by the way. Did anyone else do something like this in gym during high school? Do you think it helped or just tired you out for practice?

If you aren't already doing morning runs, this could be a very good thing. I would just do it at a steady comfortable pace. Don't deliberately try to run overly slowly as that is actually more difficult biomechanically speaking. You're probably looking at 2.5-3 miles during this run and it's no harder than the running you'd do doing game play of some other sport.

Yeah i took PE as a senior. we wouldn't run that long, but i was also worried about just exerting too much energy during games and stuff. so yeah, i'd say try and take the runs easy.
talk to your coach maybe?

Did you feel like it negatively affected your training/performance, though?

How on earth would extra training hurt you? If you are worried a 22 minute run will hurt your training, you aren't in that good of shape.

I have a similar question. I'm a junior doing regular 4 mi morning runs, and practice after school. I'm in PE where we run about 2x a week and about 2-3 mi, which isn't much at all, but I'm thinking it may affect my recovery and my performance in PM practice. and the PE coach knows that I do XC and i'm in varsity, so he expects me to run fast and beat everyone, which kind of puts me in a dilemma.

i find it very hard to believe high school PE has you running 2-3 miles in class. For me it was do 10 laps around a 20 lap/mile indoor track (you read that right), and most people walked after ~6 laps. So I smell a troll

Just skip your morning run on days that you'll be running in gym class.

I don't find it hard to believe. We were required to run a mile and built up to a mile and a half everyday during our recess in ELEMENTARY school. By the time we were in middle/high school, we typically ran 2-3 miles/day.

You school produces fat kids then, middle school and high school for me had a class where part of your final grade was your improvement in a two mile run.

Talk to your PE teacher. He/she should understand your situation. My teacher told me if I broke 5 in the mile the first class, I could take the rest of the unit off. He then offered the deal to the entire class. This was great because a douche football player was always saying this and that about how he could beat me in a mile race...anyway, I took him out in 70, eased back to an 80...he was still hanging, surprisingly. So I brought it back down to 70 and he was done. Closed it out in a 74 for the 4:59 and a free A for the unit. The football player ended up coming in around 6:15, saying he needed to save himself for practice, haha. Very rewarding experience.

Seriously though, talk to the PE teacher; he should understand your situation and probably offer you a deal.

A little more context: We have four fitness "programs" to choose from for PE class and when I told my teacher what my mile time is, he told me I would be doing the "runner" program.

4:59?

Story is false, you just magically knew that 74 would hit 4:59...riiiighht

Cute story, you lost to the football player and that's pathetic.

Wow seeing is believing. I mean, honestly, I have never seen a sophisticated program for regular hs kids.

thats 15 miles a week for EVERY 'runner' in PE.
......
.....
Sh*t, that's impressive.

Most weeks, we only run 3 out of 5 days, though, with 2 days in the classroom.

Back to the main topic... Does anyone think this could just tire me out for workouts? Or would it be helpful? Remember, it's just 2 hours before my actual practices.

You're right. Then the football player and the gym coach found me pouting in the shower, and soon the comforting caressing turned into rhythmic slapping (think two slabs of meat).

That's when I got my nickname--Ziggy Mouthful.

I would have loved to put in 3 easy miles in PE had the walkers not blocked the track. tbh, sitting in school for 7+ hours was more tiring (read: boring) than a shakeout jog, and that double stimulus would probably do wonders for your faster efforts in x-c. If anything, I'm sure your teacher would allow you to walk/rest that day if you have some kind of speed workout or race later in the afternoon.

70, 80, 70, and 74 isn't 4:59. It's 4:54. Even if those were all xx.9, you're still looking at 4:57.
You've already been called out, but this detail should prove it false.

Okay, I know in my school we were usually "required" to do running once or twice a week. Was usually 7 min of run followed by 2 of walk, repeated 3 times.

No one ran though, and if anyone did people usually gave them shit. Point of the story is how is it in other P.E. classes in other places, do kids actually try or are you out of place if you run?
