Best DI school for a honor student sprinter 8/17/2012 4:32PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I am starting my junior year of HS and I am looking for a top academic university with a history of good sprinters. I have a 3.95 and take honors and AP courses. On the PSAT I scored 59 - critical reading, 70 - Math and 62 in the writing section. I want to major in architecture or civil engineering.

You will go to USC or UCLA if you want to get a great education and become an Olympic medalist.

This. What kind of times are we talking about?

Unless you are truly a national-level athlete, your best bet could be to go with an Ivy League school. Cornell, as someone noted above, seems to keep turning out excellent sprinters--but they're hardly alone in the League.

[The main thing about the Ivies is their wonderful financial-aid programs, which can make going Ivy actually cheaper (bottom line) than getting a half-ride, say, at Inebriated State. Financial aid is the same for all admitted students, whether athlete or not.]

NOTE that if you're an excellent (though not quite national-class) sprinter, the Ivy coaches can help your chances for admission; otherwise, you'll need to try to walk on and you'll be in the regular pool for admission--in which case, you need to work on bringing up those test scores a bit: 700+ is preferred. (And I hope you're not at one of those high schools where a 3.95 puts you below the top 10% in your class!)

Oops--just re-read the OP, where you mention architecture and civil engineering as possibilities. If you're thinking Ivy League, *definitely* investigate Cornell, which has outstanding programs in both areas.

Texas has better engineering and architecture schools than Cornell, and much much better sprinters. If you are not world class, you probably will be on the intramural team at Texas, but tuition is very low, the women are very pretty, and the winter weather is very nice.

10.73, 21.79 and 48.6 (split). Hopefully I can run 10.5, low 21 and break 48 next year.

I believe USC's standards for a full or close to it, are sub 10.5. Keep in mind that half on the USA 4X400 team and Canada's semifinalist in the Olympic 100 (Aaron Brown) were on USC's team last season. UCLA doesn't recruit as high a level of athlete and recruits more of them, so your chances there might be better athletically--but academically, it is one of THE toughest schools to get into (everybody in California who can't get the scholarship for Stanford or USC wants to go to UCLA or CAL).

Even for out-of-staters, Texas at Austin is still a great deal--Sanya Richards-Ross was a national merit scholar (4.0 GPA) and stated there as an engineering major (and earned a degree in Management Information Systems), if you can believe that. Sanya's case is indication that it can be done if you're smart enough AND fast enough.

That's a pretty shitty PSAT for someone that goes around calling themselves an honor student. Sorry, that isn't really a fair thing to say to you but I hate people that call themselves honor(s) students. I mean who says something like that?
