I was just diagnosed with a stress reaction in my left tibia. I haven't run since Monday, but I've been swimming (75-100 laps, mostly freestyle, nothing fancy). I'm an incoming D1 freshman distance runner, and I'm going to be arriving at school on the 22nd. Unfortunately, I won't be able to talk to a doctor until then, so in the meantime I was wondering if I can bike on this injury or if I should stick to swimming until I talk to a doctor at school. Thanks. |

You should be able to bike with it, but it's always good to talk to the doctor. 75-100 laps is a lot of swimming. How long does that take you? |

Yes, it is common for D1 programs to put you on the bike with a shin stress fracture. Swimming and pool running are obviously OK too, but if you want some variety, the bike is fine. Even ellipticals are usually OK... the main thing is to avoid impact stress. Good luck. |

If your stress fracture was in the foot then swimming and biking would be out initially. In the shin, I think they are fine.
