New ultrarunning sensation Sage Canaday recently won the Mt. Washington mountain race in the 3rd fastest time ever and then followed that up with a course record at the American River 50-miler, destroying ultrarunning legend Anton Krupicka's old course record by over 9 minutes. My calculator shows the following estimates for Sage at some of the biggest races around the country: 64:32 / 2:16:52 -> 5:15:45 at JFK 50-miler 2:16:52 / 6:16:10 WR50 -> 14:14 at Vermont 100-miler 2:16:52 / 6:16:10 WR50 -> 17:17 at Wasatch 2:16:52 / 6:16:10 WR50 -> 13:59 at Western States 2:16:52 / 6:16:10 WR50 -> 14:59 at Leadville 2:16:52 / 6:16:10 WR50 -> 21:59 at Badwater!!! Predictions? No morons please. |

As soon as some real runners decided to run Ultras. Canaday's ability is laughable compared to top marathoners. Why would anyone do this when the big money is in marathons. When the going gets tough, find an event you can be #1 at and caLL yourself the best in the world. C'mon get serious. |

He has never run American River 50 and Mt Wash is non ultra uphill road race. You are retarded. |

American River, White River, same difference. Decrease all original projected times by 0.37% |

His White River performance is damn solid. I think (and hope) he'll get some more records and do well. Anyone who thinks Sage is no good at ultras should go out and race him and see how they do in an ultra. Good luck. |

good answer Ultra's are a way to call yourself good as you avoid all the great runners in the world. These guys are not even in the same league as Rupp, Farah and the great Kenyans and Ethiopians |

ha ha, this thread is funny. "Verntarded 2.0" I have no idea who you are but I do like your projections! The thing is I really haven't run enough trail/ultras/mountain runs to know what to expect (esp 100 miles which is a totally different race from 50 miles). Thanks for the support VF Runner and a couple others - much appreciated. For the rest of you: believe me...I know exactly where I stand against Rupp et al. We were in the same hs class in Oregon (large school division class of '04). I also ran NCAA DI in track and cross country and a couple Olympic trials in the marathon....so yeah, I know exactly where I'm ranked nationally - and on the world scene it is quite "laughable." I will tell you 2:16:52 in the marathon doesn't get you much though (not saying that I deserve much either with that kind of time) so the money isn't there either! Ultra running on the trails is flat-out more fun and feels more natural. You should try it sometime. I'd still like to run in the Olympic trials marathon in 2016 as well if I can though. Cheers, Sage |

You are correct. 2:16 won't get you anywhere in a marathon - although it is not bad (only 1 min slower than the women's world record). My point is that is where the real competition is, and I think you know exactly what I mean. I have nothing against Ultra, but you can't compare it to world class marathoning. And you haven't. |

Only on this website can you run 2:16, go to the Olympic Trials, get hated on, respond nicely and still get crap from people who probably can't break 17:00 for the 5k. |

I could wear a 20 lbs weight vest and beat Sage Canaday with my eyes closed on any course. |

Believe me, I can't break 24 for 5k right now. Did I crap on him? I don't think so. |

Yeah, Coach Canada, take your hate and low blows to the sites that appreciate that kind of runner bashing OOPS, sorry, I guess you are already there |

Nice parody, ventarded 2.0! You got ventolin's pull-it-out-of-your-butt numbers with the arrows. Effectively used the word "moron". But where is the nonsensical spacing of lines, use of the word "idiot", and the shrill accusations that none of us can read? |

Sage, Welcome to the Ultra Family. All are welcome and we respect the effort and achievements of everyone who finishes. And we ignore the critics who sit on the sidelines. It's a great bunch of people and runners. The race directors work for little or no financial gain, and purely for love of the sport. Those who only know big city marathons cannot imagine the spirit of an isolated aid station somewhere in the woods after nightfall. I hope you smash the records and bring more of your friends to our races. |

Hey, I'm all for anyone who runs. Ultras are just fine. I think though you have kept it in its proper perspective. |

What's hilarious is that they DO have an ultra in the Olympics but even though it is the longest race, they won't let you run it. |

Regarding your estimates: JFK 50 miler...could be possible but that is still 6:18 pace (first 8-10 miles are very technical single track too)...new course record was just set this past year by David Riddle Vermont 100: record is 14:53 by Leigh Schmitt...could be broken by an elite ultra runner... Wasatch 100: Geoff Roes (Western States 2010 winner)has the record of 18:30 on a very tough course Western States 100: nobody is running 13:59 on that course...record was just broken this year by Timothy Olson at 14:46 (that's 8:36 pace with 22K of descent and 15K ascent) on an abnormally cool day. It never got above 75 degrees in the canyons where normally it is over 100) Leadville 100: that record is untouchable..15:42 by Matt Carpenter....he has the record by over 30 minutes...read his account of the record...http://www.skyrunner.com/story/2005lt100.htm Badwater: unlikely in that heat...record was almost broken this year though by Mike Morton, but it was an unusually cooler day (110 instead of 120-125) |
