Swim Portion of NYC Ironman may not happen - Sewage in the Hudson 8/10/2012 5:45AM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
How pissed would you be if you trained for months to find out that you will likely not do the swim portion of your Ironman. There was a sewage pipe that broke in Terrytown and millions of gallons of sewage is being dumped into the Hudson. They said there is a good chance there will not be a swim.

Do you think you could demand a refund?

I think I'd be more pissed if the swim was not cancelled and I was forced to decide whether to compete in an event I've been training for or swim in sewage.

Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to talk strictly about running 100 percent of the time on this site.

I don't feel sorry for anyone associated with that race. They charged a ridiculous entry fee (around $800, I recall?). Plus, the thing was more than halfway sold out before online registration opened. Clearly, an event for Wall Streeters.

I am sure the sign up form for the Ironman has a "force majeur" clause that gets them out of refunds for cancellations for circumstances beyond their control (fire, flood, strikes, earthquakes, etc.). Of course, anyone willing to swim in the Hudson would probably not be bothered by a sewage leak. At least you know what you are getting versus what is in those 55 galloon drums the Russian guys keep dumping into the river off of Bayonne NJ.

Aren't all Ironmans ~800 bucks to enter?

I have two friends racing tomorrow. Without the swim one of them will give the elites a run for their money. I think the swim is on now although is anyone really going to notice a couple million gallons of sewage in the Hudson?

$1000 entry x 2500 athletes = sold out in 11 mins.
