No they hate the Olympics. The old ESPN show "The Sports Reporters" comvinced me of the disinterest and annoyance of their reporters having to talk about the Olympics every 4 years. When a track world record in the 100 is ever shown on their "Play of the Day" it makes 10th place behind regular season baseball home runs, double plays, or a diving catch. That fat ass Conlyn from Philadelphia claimed the Olympic Marathon Champion is as impressive as someone who could heat the most spagetti. |

Of course, and for a rather obvious reason: these conventional sports "reporters" are pretty dim bulbs on balance, and (the dirty truth is) they know next to nothing about even the "mainstream" sports they normally cover. So, when a sporting event like the Olympics (or the World Cup in soccer, the Tour de France, the [fill in the blank], or whatever) comes around, they're are annoyed by the possibility of their being exposed as the ignorant twits that they are. Look, even a garden-variety vegetable with an I.Q. scraping 90 could watch ESPN's "Sports Center" for, say, a week and, thereafter, pass himself off as quasi-knowledgeable about NFL football, Major League baseball, even professional golf. Learn a few names, embrace a little of the jargon, one can bluff one's way through. But these ignorant, lazy asses don't even know long 800 meters is, much less who David Rudisha is, much less anything about what running an 800 meter race is all about. Their "lack of interest" stems from the fact that their having any interest would require them to do some actual work. That, plus their natural egotism, and you get the world we see on television and hear on the radio: "Look, if this 800 meters thing is such a big deal, how come I don't know anything about it?" |

This is the correct answer. If ESPN (and ABC) is not televising the event or league, it is NOT covered by them at all. They really are not a NEWS organization. They are an ENTERTAINMENT organization concerned only with maximizing profit. |

All good points. I would like to add that American sports coverage and it's fans suffer from short attention spans. They can't keep up with a soccer or hockey match because the game isn't broken into little parts that make it understandable. The only Olympic sports you will see on the ESPN front page are the 100/200 because they are short and have little enough strategy that they don't need explanation (imagine ESPN attempting to explain all the changes in the 10k race). I always see MMA on their front page. They must have paid a contract to cover it because it's really hard to consider that much of a sport. |

I'm severely disappointed with ESPN's coverage of the Olympics. You have to understand that they do this because NBC has the television rights. If ESPN had the rights you better believe all the Oly news would be everywhere in their content. But they don't. So they just worry about giving the other sports, because why else would you tune in to ESPN for these two weeks? I dislike how little is shown on SportsCenter, but they're bitter and don't want to pay NBC for any of the video. Stinks, but they're right. If you want Olympics turn to NBC. If you want baseball and now the preseason, then watch ESPN. |
