Getting an MRI tomorrow -- does this hurt real bad?
Getting an MRI tomorrow -- does this hurt real bad?
I've never had an MRI where they inject the dye directly into the area that's getting scanned. They just put it in a vein...it hurts as much as a blood test, which is to say not at all.

I've only had an MRI with dye injected in a vein, as well. Doesn't hurt a bit. In fact, I found the whole experience of lying down in the tube with earplugs and those cool mirrored glasses pretty darn relaxing.
Good luck!

No, not really. You injury already hurts somewhat, right? It doesn't hurt any worse than that. If anything, you might experience some additional tightness in the joint, that's about it.
Not at all
ps--your doctor would have been more than happy to answer this question for you.

Au contraire! How can you be so sure? My dad is a doctor and always responds to "Will it hurt, doc?" with "It won't hurt me one bit!" He never actually answers the patients question. He just says that and then hits 'em with whatever he's got. He's a world-class arsehole.
I had a stress fracture in my femoral neck and I had to have a contrast MRI where they injected the contrast directly into the hip joint. Didnt hurt that bad! Dont worry about it, get your injury figured out and try to get healthy!
my doc said it "doesn't feel good" about getting dye injected into your hip. i might have to do it soon. good luck!
No, it doesn't hurt at all.
Try contrast with a CT scan. They release it during the test. Massive rush of warmth goes over your body and it makes it feel like you are going to piss your pants.
Then when you pee later it's neon green. Wild.
You should do some research on gadolinium and see whether it is being used for your procedure. Some people have sufferred horrible reactions to gadolinium. Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis is a condition that some believe is related to gadolinium. It is basically like having your skin burn from the inside. I had a non-gadolinium contrast dye used in two different imaging procedures and had no problem with either. No more pain than the initial needle stick, which, thanks to being a skinny runner with easy to spot veins, was very easy.
Crazy...this actually happened to a kid in my class. She went in to get a contrast image for something wrong with her wrist. She had a reaction to the dye and had massive health problems as a result. This was back in 1997, though. No doubt things have changed since then.

You're scarin' me bro!
Is it an MR-Arthigram?
I got one when I had a stress fracture in my femur.
It didn't hurt so much but it freaked me out seeing a needle being pushed like 5 inches in my leg.
It's not pleasant.
Gadolinium is much safer than the agents used for CT scans with contrast. NSF really only happens in patients with poor renal function, and it is very rare even with this population. Anaphylactoid reactions are also very rare. Be more worried about driving to the hospital and not getting in an accident.

Mine didn't hurt at all. The technician who did the procedure went into a lot of detail about what he was going to do, and how it would feel. I elected NOT to look at the needle, lol.
It's so much that it's painful, but there's a lot of pressure... and it makes you want to tense up, but if you do, the dye gets injected into your muscle. Don't tense up, or they'll have to re-do it. Good luck.
Well it's me again, had it done yesterday -- what a joke is all I can say, a lot of worry for absolutely nothing.
Certainly not "pleasant", but far from painful.
Sorry, didn't mean to freak you out! Glad it worked out. I should have mentioned that bad reaction she had is like a 1 in 100,000 occurrence.
Let us know what you find out! Nobody ever follows up around here. Cheers!

That's what most of us told you in the first place.
