Leads from the gun. Qualifies for Olympic finals after running all three seasons (all three NCAAs) leading up. Hell, I even hear his altitude tent was bought off craigslist.

Not if he's from Glastonbury, CT. Not really a blue collar kind of place.
People forget that Cabral was the same class as Fernandez, Derrick, Lowe, Puskedra, Fout. He was one of the favorites going into footlocker that year after breaking the course record at Van Cortlandt Park. The dude is NCAA champion, and has now made the Olympic final. One can argue that he's had the most success out of that class of runners.
Cabral on his plane ride to the Oxy meet:
"On the plane ride here, I had motivational speakers on my left and right and they got me really pumped up."
Blue collar to the core.

"One could argue?" I don't think one could argue against it. He has been to more Olympics and Olympics finals than the rest of them combined.Shoot, I think he has the same amount of NCAA titles as all of them combined.

Glastonbury has plenty of landscapers...

Cabral never broke the course record at VCP. And yes, one could certainly argue he's been the most successful from his class. Chris Derrick is the only other runner who can measure up with Cabral at this point.
He's definitely had the most success out of that class. Derrick is still the better runner though.

Cabral ran 5k Course record at VCP. The official one anyway. I guess there are rumors of Mcdougal or someone running 15 flat in an open race.

Derrick a better distance runner yes. Would you really pick Derrick over Cabral in a mile though?

Ok, 5k record. Wasn't aware of that. When I hear VCP, I automatically think 2.5. Thanks for the info.
I don't know but I will never prejudge Cabral again. Some years back at Footlocker (in HS) I remember thinking anyone builded like (thick thighs & compact)will never make it to the top ranks.

It was by chance that he sat next to them on the plane. He didnt bring them with him for the meet.
he sure looks blue collar when he runs. Not exactly grace personified, but he sure does grind it out.
I wonder how a race would go between the Chris Derrick of indoor track/stanford 10k and the Donn Cabral of outdoor track/penn relays/olympic trials.
Cabral is definitely running fantastic right now. Did he end up signing with Nike or is he doing another collegiate year at Colorado? I've heard both and seem to remember him running in a nike kit at the trials but not 100% sure.
blue collar - working at the mill all day, training after work, taking the greyhound to meets.
flying to meets, with in a row with motivational speakers, living in Glastonbury, CT, median household income of ~90k/year, 96% white, < 1% living below poverty, etc. not exactly "blue collar".
sounds like a life of privilege to me.

This is kind of revisionist history. It was Derrick and Fernandez all the way as the favorites. Cabral was definitely known as a stud to us in the Northeast, but I didn't read people suggesting he would win.
If I remember he went for it and was in the top few spots until he fell apart a bit at the end and finished...what, like 7th or 8th? I remember his future teammate Brian Leung beating him.

How do you figure? Donn is better at the steeple, and based on the Penn Relays I'm going to assume 1500 and down. Derrick is probably better at 5k and 10k. 3k could be interesting.
But compared to the rest of the world Cabral is better at his best events than Derrick. When you're compared a long distance runner to a middle distance runner, isn't the tie-breaker who is better at their best event?

Cabral is pro now, with Nike.
Derrick is a considerably better runner than Cabral. The steeplechase is a weak event in comparison to Derrick's main events. If Derrick decided to do the steeple, he'd be right behind Jager.
Tell that to all the great distance runners with 1 or 2 8:50+ steeples to their names.
