How fast?
How fast?
Yeah don't bother giving your own opinion or anything.
Right now probably 5:30 easily. With training sub 5 without a doubt
5:38 if motivation could be found (doubtful)
Why is this relevant? How fast can Rupp do a 200 butterfly?
at my HS a state champion distance swimmer ran a 10k with me - he did around 42 minutes. Which according to mcmillan is good for a 5:40 mile.
So Filps could do better than that, but not a whole lot better - I would guess 5:18

maybe the author thought it was a possibly entertaining thread topic?
like those "how fast can lebron james run a 5k" threads with dozens of responses.
I'll say probably 5:20, but 4:20s if trained properly.
and rupp's 200 butterfly is no faster than 2:10
Rupp couldn't complete a 200m butterfly without getting DQ'ed.
proof?

I plugged Rupp's times into Ventolin's magical calculator and that is what it told me for 200 Fly.
Rupp's probably spent more time in the pool than Phelps has on the roads...

Moron....Imbecile...you post drivel...
Just because Phelps is a much better swimmer than your friend doesn't mean that he's a better runner.

Faster than he can swim one. Hope this helps.

But not as fast as he can bike a mile. Again, I hope this helps you.

According to his PR's, Phelps can run:
100 meters: 10.93
400 meters: 50.19
800 meters: 2:02
1 mile: 4:27
Yannick Agnel is even faster though at:
100 meters: 10.56
1500 meters: 4:06
I don't know. Probably not all that fast though. I seriously doubt Phelps would run below five minutes for a mile, even with a fair amount of training.
I can't seem to find much data regarding mile times for swimmers or other elite athletes but was able to locate some marathon times, although Phelps would probably perform better in a mile than in a marathon. (One of Phelps' specialties, the 400 meter IM takes him about 4:03, similar to the amount of time a semi-elite runner would take to run a mile) Many Olympic champions or elite athletes in other sports do not run particularly fast marathons.
For example, Apolo Ohno, who was the most decorated Olympic speed skater, ran in 2011 New York City Marathon (3:25:12.)
Jennie Finch, 2011 New York City Marathon (Olympic softball player) (4:05:26)
Mark Messier, 2011 New York City Marathon (4:14:27 - NHL)
Lance ran 2:46:43, equivalent to a 5:03 mile even with the benefit of alleged blood doping. And cycling performance is generally more closely correlated with running performance than swimming is. Lance and Phelps have very similar BMIs of about 22.5. Phelps is also extremely flexible, with short legs in relation to the rest of his body and large feet. which could be a detriment to running performance.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/10,000_metres
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_world_records_in_swimming
Most of the top triathletes in the world in the 2008 Olympic triathlon are only swimming 1500 meters in 19:xx and running a 10K in 30:xx, while the world records for these events individually are
14:34.14 and 26:17.53 respectively (not fully sure if these records are up to date).
Granted the swim is open water and the run is slightly impaired since it is after the bike. Still, few if any of these world-class triathletes are either world-class swimmers or world-class runners. Thus to be extraordinarily good at multiple sports is pretty unusual, unless its something like sprinting or jumping and a running-based sport like basketball or football.
I find it hard to believe Phelps can't break 5 in the mile. Doesn't he spend a significant amount of time daily swimming, meaing his heart rate would be up every day just as a competitve runner's would? Also, he's lean and I'm sure he could run a pretty decent 400. I wouldn't be suprised if he could run under 5 with no running training, and run around 4:20 or faster if he trains for a while.
I guarantee he could not break 5. He'd be lucky to break 6.
Elite swimmers are some of the most unathletic people outside of the pool. One guy I work with who swam in college can't run without his legs making this weird pigeon footed circular motion (used in a swimming stroke I would guess). And, a friend of mines brother won bronze in athens and the guy can barely walk for a few minutes straight without tripping over himself.
Based on this experience I'd say a 6 minute mile at best.
