I woke up on Sunday in my new home of Baltimore, picked up the paper outside (already subscribed) and was happy to see a front page sports article by Chris Korman on Matt Centrowit Jr. http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2012-07-14/sports/bs-sp-matt-centrowitz-0715-20120714_1_matt-centrowitz-leonel-manzano-andy-powell The article had some really great quotes from Andy Powell (and Centro Sr. of course).

I ran with Centro Sr. in college. I had the immense pleasure of getting to meet Matthew last year. Cool kid. I had a gut feeling in Fall 2010, that 2011 was going to see him breakthrough and sweep Pac 10's, NCAA's AND USATF's. And darned if he didn't do it. He's got a great sense of humor and a great support team around him. GOOD LUCK AT THE GAMES MATTHEW! |

Rojo, I'm a reporter at the Sun. Glad to hear you liked the story, and you're a subscriber. I would have tried to cover Centro myself but I'm on the metro desk and have been buried, but I thought Chris Korman did a fantastic job -- couldnt have done much better myself even as a devoted follower of the sport. Usually you can tell when you read these local profiles of athletes, you can tell the writers know nothing about track, I find. Yeah Centro was in pitiful shape at the trials. I mean 3:35, come on. If he was in real shape, he woulda put it on Leo. Get a grip, and stop trying to sandbag. I am glad centro, wheating, and leo both made the Olympics, but the only one who looked like trash out there was Wheating. |

I'll be happy when Centro doesn't make the finals and all this hype abou his WC medal goes away. Just remember he had the slowest medalling time ever at the WC. |

Nice story. Centro is just a smart racer. I would say he picks up a couple of places in lots of races just by making good tactical choices. He obviously starts out with a good base of natural talent and training but once he gets into a race he is better than average at maximizing whatever his potential is on that day. |

You really haven't kept up on the news. He lost a month in April due to knee surgery. If you followed the sport better, you'd know that he lost that month, that they kept it quiet, that the then focused on his strength and not his speed -- and that he was sweating bullets faking it through the rounds that he had enough to get it done. Try and keep up. Very few guys and girls who lose a month as late as April make the Olympic Team. I know, because my roommate did it; it's not that easy. |

Because Centro is vastly overrated. He's just average elite guy, but people like to make him out to be he's the greatest ever. I do keep up with the sport. My post doesn't have any implications I don't keep up with the sport. Just not big on "oh I placed poorly because of X,Y,Z." Regardless of who wrote what. |
