"Oh, Webb is just a time trialer; he's not good at racing, ANYBODY can just follow rabbits who pace perfectly and run a fast time..."
Blah, blah, blah
Nick Willis had perfect pacemaking today, having rabbits bringing him through the same splits that Webb hit in his AR run (watch here if you don't remember
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7aTRTvo2ouo
)
Both had two pacesetters, one to bring through 800m and the other 1200m. Both Webb and Willis hit 400m in 55 high, 800m in 1:53 low, and 1200m in 2:50. Then both were alone for the last lap. The difference was that Webb was able to boss his last lap and run his 3:46.91 while Nick Willis fades to a 3:53.64. Same exact type of race due to same amount of rabbits and same splits, but one runs a 3:46 and the other a 3:47.
But Willis is clearly the better runner right? He got Olympic Bronze when Webb hasn't gotten any international medals, Willis is a RACER etc etc
Well here was Willis's chance to PROVE that anyone can run as fast given good conditions and failed miserably. And there have been other miles in the past couple years with good pacemaking taking the field through 1:52 800m and 2:51 1200m, yet no 3:46's or 3:47's
Webb's 3:46 was no joke. Not just anybody can do what he did.
