yeah man I mean I love it and its a lotta fun but you can definitely do better haha if guys like you ran there then guys like me wouldn't but the program is definitely growing and getting a lot better as the years go by but the team is usually guys who are around 1:56 4:20's and 9:40's just so you know

Title IX killed men's XC there long ago. Coach Frye is one of the best sprint/hurdle guys in the world, and that's where they spend their scholarships. Occasionally some decent throwers (perhaps because his son threw discus).

Title IX seems to have killed their women's XC as well.

Let's get one thing straight. To the guy who said this program was never good, you may be right by saying we've never been great as a team. But if you don't think Otukile Lekote was a stud and a half, you need to be pistol whipped.

On the basis of sprinting, yeah, that's our thing. More specifically hurdling. But I'd like to see any coach work as hard as Stan Rosenthal does with the dismal amount of resources he's allotted. People put in the work, but it's hard to recruit top notch guys without a cross country team, and even harder to get them to come for free. We work hard in the classroom and most of us are on academic scholarships.

Trash us all you want, but it's not for lack of trying. And to the OP, if you are willing to put in the miles and push yourself, we'd welcome you with open arms.

I also believe that Coach Rosenthal actually cares about his runners and they have a very good team environment. He may not have had a lot to work with but he has remained positive about the program and the students do well in the classroom. That should count for something.

Do the men distance runners still max out at 60-70 miles a week?
Really? Man.

It's easy to laugh at training in Columbia, considering it's one of the hottest and most humid places you can find. But they did host the Olympic Trials marathon several years ago. And as they said in "New York, New York," if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.

For what it's worth, USC also has one of the top-ranked business schools in the country (particularly international business) and is a solid SEC school. Sure, if you have what it takes to make Stanford's team, go there. But a distance runner could have a good experience there.

I know, I know... I lived in Columbia for medical school prior to my fellowship at MUSC. Certainly not ideal for distance running, but your quote rings true.

First of all, you have to realize Rosenthal (the gamecock's distance coach) finds the hardest working guys that are willing to subject themselves to high mileage training and rarely any financial award. These kids enter the program as average walk ons that Rosenthal builds into SEC caliber runners by the end of their collegiate careers. Just this year their top miler Razzic (pardon my spelling) split 4:07 in their mile leg of the DMR and made the finals of Outdoor SECs in the 1500.

So in hindsight, 4:21 is pretty good for a high school runner (a rising senior I assume)... but USC realizes Rosenthal can build its own distance program from the ground up and the results are starting to show. Honestly, I’ve grown up an avid track follower for the Clemson Tigers but in my book you have to give credit where credit is due.I bite my tongue as I praise USC, but the gamecocks distance program headed by Rosenthal is just beginning to make a name for itself.

A kid from my high school went to USC as a walk on a couple years ago. He ran 1:59 as a sr in HS and dropped a 1:52 as a frosh. Not really sure what kind of training he was doing, but he was obviously doing something right down there

How many SEC caliber runners has he built? How many points do they usually score at SEC's in the distance events? They have the sporadic decent runner, but anyone pimping their distance squad is probably someone associated with the program. They don't have men's xc, but their women were 11/12th at conference and 24th at regionals.

It's a good academic school and the distance runners are obviously doing it for the love of the sport, since most of their money goes to sprints/fields. But it's nothing that needs to be hyped up.

My son (2:05/4:52, soon to be junior) has just started thinking about college and running, so we've looked at different programs in SC to get a feel for what he would have to run to make teams around the state. Although USC is well behind Clemson in distance, they are still one of the better programs in the state compared to Coastal Carolina, the Citadel and others (although SC State has a few 800 guys in the low 1:50's)

Here's a link for USC's results: http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/scar/sports/c-track/auto_pdf/2011-12/misc_non_event/12MenOutdoorTT.pdf

I don't see a 1:52, but they have several guys 1:56 or under, and in the 1500 Razick went sub 3:50 and another guy was close to breaking 4:00

I am not sure of the school's quality academically, but doesn't Charleston Southern University have a decent distance squad?

I'd stay far away from the Citadel.

CofC is a great school, but I don't think your son will pursue running once he gets there. Too much beer and tail on that campus.

My old teammate who ran 1:52 was a frosh last year. This year I don't know what was up, but he ran in only one or two races indoors and then nothing for the rest of the year...injured I suppose. Hopefully he'll have a bounce back junior year.

And for your son, walking on to a team like SC would most likely take something in the 1:57-59 range or 4:30ish...and if he does that, then he would have to decide between going to a SEC school or a smaller school in the state. Both options can be good depending on what your son's goals are.
