OK Folks, here is the story. I am all for Galen getting a medal, but we have to remember that he first must make it through the semi-finals. Nearly all of these races start at a snails pace and end up racing the last mile in 3:57. Galen must first have to change his strategy a bit. I know we have seen that in the last few months Galen has displayed a better kick, and tremendous speed. I truly feel his only chances to start his surge with 6 laps to go. There will just be too many runners with a little more speed than Galen. I am not trying to knock the guy, because I really want him to beat the Africans, I just want to assist him with some strategy. |

According to A Duck Galen has already won gold because he's the greatest runner of all time. |

I'm still wondering about that eight man final the Olympic web site has posted. I'm just hoping it is a typo and should be 18. Brojos, any chance you could call upon someone at USATF and ask them about it? |

He made the finals at World Championships last year just fine, what makes you think this year will be a problem? |

Last time I checked there can be only 3 ethiopians and 3 kenyans in Olympics and all of them won't be in the same heat. This years Galen Rupp can and will last mile of a 10k in around 3-57, so it shouldn't be a prob doing in the slow 5000m heat.... |

The last auto qualifiers (4th place) in the 3 heats of the 5000 in the last Olympics ran 2:29, 2:29, and 2:26 for the last 1000m respectively. No one ran under 13:37. Last auto qualifier ran 13:48. Last time qualifier ran 13:42. http://www.iaaf.org/oly08/results/eventcode=3659/racedate=08-20-2008/sex=M/discCode=5000/combCode=hash/roundCode=h/results.html#detM_5000_hash_h |

A 26:48/12:58 dude will have no trouble making the final. |

By "nearly all" semifinals finishing in 3:57, you mean "virtually none", right? |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfNoCq-x2ak So here is that semi from last year. Rupp was near the front for the most of the race. With less than 600m to go a group rushed past him. With a lap to go there was one person between him and Lagat. Lagat made some nifty moves on the back-straight to take the lead with less than 200m to go and put 5 people between him and Rupp who was in 7th. Lagat powered on to win the heat. Rupp passed two on the home-straight to take 5th and qualify for the final. |
