I'm not exactly a huge RW fan, but Amby Burfoot, Kenny Moore, Jeff Galloway, and Ed Eyestone are all on staff there. Hobie Call couldn't carry their jockstraps with a wheelbarrow, with or without a 40-pound vest on. And Scott Douglas wasn't exactly a slouch either, with a 68:40 half marathon best. It wasn't straight downhill like Bryce Canyon, but it still seems pretty solid.

2:14, I'll take it. Unlike Hobie, I can't make an exact prediction as to how soon I'll be able to run it but I'll at least try to set something out.

Fall 2012-2:45, Spring 2013-2:35, Fall 2013-2:25, Spring 2014-2:20, Fall 2014-2:15

I'll be weighing in weekly and reporting it on this thread, maybe tell a bit about my training, beg for someone to give me money so I can quit my job, etc.

Interesting posts but the truth is 1) Hobie is only at best a National Class type runner. He's barely Olympic Trial material. That does not imply he's got the born-in talent to significantly better. Truth is; he doesn't.

2) If anyone knows anything about the physical human body; our legs, hips, lower back, all the connective tissue cannot withstand running with a 40 pound vest on a daily basis, let alone running a 4:34 mile or 22 lbs for 5K at a 4:34 pace. Hobie or anybody else would break down.

Hobie would risk and would certainly succumb to serious injury so his chances of going steps 1 through 4 are almost NILL.

Maybe instead he should run ultramarathons with a helium balloon vest, then gradually take balloons off and come down in distance.

Actually, I have a modest proposal--and apologies to J. Swift for stealing the phrase.

Why doesn't he run one mile with a very young calf on his shoulders? There's a long pedigree in such things.

Then run the same mile once a week for an entire year, as the calf grows into a cow.

If he can JUST maintain the same fast pace as the calf cow-izes [sic], within one year he'll be good enough to make those East Africans wish they'd never heard his name.

Of course, they'd treat the calf--cow, whatever--with somewhat more reverence. But what do they know?

And even THAT is infinitely more feasible than 2:16 to sub 2.

The mythical hero Milo of Croton became the strongest man in the world by lifting and carrying a calf every day until it grew into a full-grown bull. Milo, perhaps unwittingly, achieved the pinnacle of strength by applying the principle of progressive overload...

If he is able to run that fast for the half with that amount of weight, sub 2hrs is selling himself short. Sub 1:50 would be the likely comparison.

John Landy was by far a better miler than Bannister at that time.

I searched PubMed for studies that looked at the effect of resistance training on endurance, but couldn't find any. Most of the studies using weighted vests were testing the effects on bone density for senior citizens.

I really want to see a video of a sub 5 minute mile, on a track, of Hobie wearing a 40 pound vest. I don't believe he has ever done even one mile like this successfully, let alone a mile at 4:40 or 4:34.

Hobie is like Jason Rahm, but with more talent.

If he does break 2:00 then I'll get a % (yet undetermined, but ~60-70%) of his income derived from breaking the record (purses, book deals, appearance fees, etc.).

This is quite the generous offer. In summary, if he can't do it, he pays you back 100%. If he can do it, he pays you back something like 20000%. If your day job doesn't include being a loan shark, you've missed your calling! (Of course in reality, he can't do it, and you'd never see a penny of your money back).
I guess you never been involved in venture capitalism. I'm assuming that I'd never see the $10K back from a guy installing ACs, so I'm assuming all the risk. He says he'd never be able to do it without financial assistance - which I can provide. If he can't do it, he gets two years of financial assistance. If he does it, he gets two years financial assistance plus 30-40% of income derived from future earnings (which is very generous if it was a VC deal).

He is actually getting a great deal out of it either way.
VC, loan shark... same thing. My point is that if you want to lay claim to future earning like that you need to give up on the initial capital. Your offer is hardly a 'great deal'.

I want to sponsor YOU for 1-2 years but after that I want a sub 2hr marathon. While we are scamming everybody we'll split the profits 50/50.

Sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me if I were him. Call said he couldn't do it without financial help and this guy is going to give it to him. Sounds reasonable that he gets a large chunk of the profits for putting up the $.
