Galen Rupp Is Tremendous, But.... 7/9/2012 11:36PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I would place these athletes above Galen Rupp at 10,000m in London.
Mo Farah: Galen cannot defeat his training partner.
Kenenisa Bekele: Kenenisa is not what he was, but he's the toughest sob who has ever competed. Nobody recognizes that, but they'll finally realize it in London.
Tariku Bekele: Tariku has always been overshadowed by his brother, but he is stronger than Galen.
Moses Kipsiro: often overlooked by the cognoscenti, Kipsiro is a seasoned and savvy racer.
Wilson Kiprop: stunning stamina, can probably run 26:35.

Then there are these athletes at Galen's level:
Moses Masai: 12:59 in Paris, excellent resume.
Gebre Gebremariam: can run with the big boys, but may come up short.

I will add that IF they were competing in the London 10,000m, I'd place these athletes above Galen Rupp:
Gebremeskel: obviously on a whole different level, 12:46, cannot be shaken.
Isaiah Koech: 10,000m is his event, and he'd likely win gold in London. He ran 12:48 and did much of the work.
John Kipkoech: 12:49 at age 20?
Thomas Longosiwa: 12:49 in Paris.

Galen has his work cut out for him, but at least he doesn't have to face most of the best runners in the world in the 10,000m in London. However, he cannot defeat 2 Bekeles and his training partner, not to mention several others mentioned above.

IF there were such a thing as a world cross country championships, but on a track (picture a 1600m dirt track) and it was 10,000m, but each country could send 7, Galen would NOT finish in the top 12. OK, we already know that Galen wouldn't finish in the top 10 in a real world cross country championship. So, he is not medal material, but I agree with Rojo or Wejo that this is the year that the stars are in alignment for Galen at 10,000m. However, it will NOT be enough. Kenenisa will refuse to settle for less than silver. That leaves one spot for Galen, and it will be a ferocious battle for that spot, and there are too many who will fight with a tenacity that will extinguish Galen's medal hopes before the least lap commences.

Galen has been sandbagging by losing to Farah over and over and over again. He is going for Gold in London, and he is going to get it. I can't wait to see all you haters cry about what a weak year it is and how Galen isn't really that great after he wins. Your tears will be so delicious.

I'd be as happy as anybody here if Galen won gold. I certainly don't hate him at all. Galen is already a golden boy, and he has inspired many. All I offer is reality to the fanboys and you're one of them. Galen winning gold in London would be like Evan Jager winning gold in London. Neither is going to happen, but I think Jager and Galen both have the same chances of even getting a medal, zero, zilch, nada.

And exactly what chance would you have give Shalane for a world cross bronze two years ago? Probably the same. The Africans are great, but not unbeatable. Training with Mo is Galen's trump card, which he will parlay into a medal.

East African women's distance is not as nearly as dominant as it is for the men. Due to cultural aspects, they've not nearly asserted their dominance as the men have (compare white women's accomplishments in distance vs. white men, and they've accomplished far more in terms of medals and records as opposed to EA women and men). Men's distance running on the African side is far more deep than it is on the women's side, but that's slowly changing.

Why do people think that all of the africans always show up and have one of their best days at worlds or the olympics. With the exception of a very, very few, most are highly inconsistent and fall apart in the latter half of these races. Look at some of the company Rupp was in even back in 2009 at worlds and look at their credentials at that time compared to his. On paper, they should have murdered him, but they didn't.

These races aren't run on paper folks and Galen is probably the most consistent distance runner at the world class level for men and he's shown that he's on another level than last where he went 26:48.

It's that simple, he is one of the men to beat for a medal at 10000.

Can we stop comparing pre classic and Paris DL times already? If rupp ran Paris he would be the AR holder right now. Your analysis is weak bro geb geb? Mo himself has said Galen is on his level. Kenny B is beatable TB maybe not as much. I think there is a very good chance Kenya comes up empty.

excluding K.Bekele I find it fascinating people/fans know who these Africans are? I follow American running but in general I really don't care who these African are. The only thing I care about is Americans placing high as possible.

What do you think - Mo is going to say, "Yeah, Rupp's OK but no way he is on my level. I'll beat his butt every time."?

Seriously?

I mean, do you ever stop to think before posting?

I mean... Oh, never mind.

Seriously?

Why do people make statements like this and not provide substance to their claim? If you don't think so, name who you think is more consistent.
