Silva was pretty smart to stay as far back as he did. Those guys that tried to stay right on Lagat and El G on the second last lap burned themselves out. The penultimate lap was about 54.8, and they probably didn't realize those two were actually going to get FASTER to 51.9 final. Silva though stayed back and on the last lap simply flew by a dying Estevez and Ukranian guy.

After a complicated analysis of the youtube video(my methods consisted of clicking the pause/play button really quickly), I have come up with the following times for Rui's last 400 and 800 and El G's (for reference).

at 400 left and 800 left Rui was 2:43.3 and 1:48.3-1:48.4 (harder to see him with 800 to go). If we round his 3:34.68 finish to 3:34.7 he closed in 51.3 and 1:46.3-1:46.4 respectively.

El G, on the other hand, was 2:42.2 and 1:47.3 with one and two laps to go. Rounding his 3:34.18 to 3:34.2 gives him a 52.0 and 1:46.9 for final 400 and 800.

Jim Ryun ran the last lap of a 1500 in 49 high in 1967, these drug cheats have nothing on him.

Actually it looks to me like the silver medalist closed even faster. Look at where he is in comparison to Cacho at the bell and then at the finish.
