a friend and I are giving some serious consideration to going to London for the track and field portion of the Olympic games. Does anyone know of any places that are offering inexpensive accommodations or have a rental that they are interested in splitting the cost with ?

Dream on, buddy! Cheap accommodations during the Olympics??? You must be smoking the wacky weed. You should have qualified for the team if you wanted a cheap place to stay. Sorry to mock - just expect a little more from you, nikeman.

There is no such thing as inexpensive accommodation in London - ever. I remember 9 years ago paying 90 Euros for bunk beds at a hostel; we didn't even get our own bathroom. It would be cool to be there during the Olympics, but you will spend a fortune just to watch Rupp get his ass kicked by Levins (plus by now I'm sure there are no accommodations left anyway).

There are several hostels, rental apartments on various travel sites, expedia, orbitz, london.net, etc. For me, I just landed into a hotel by Hyde Park. Nothing in London is cheap anytime of the year. I travel there 2-3 x/year. There are options...good luck!

Maybe a bum will rent you his spot by the river for a few nights. That's just about the only way you could possibly stay in London for cheap during the Olympics.

Then you got ripped off big time. You can get a hostel bed right in piccadilly circus for £25 and a 1-2 star hotel for around £60 (non-olympic times).

To the OP - I was looking this up for someone else recently and the best option I found was staying at the travelodge in a town called Chelmsford for £42.50 a night for 2 people then taking the train. This was bookable yesterday for random dates during the Olympics. Direct train is £20 each return (about 30 min. each way) to the olympic park in Stratford, last train back just after midnight. Ebbsfleet is another town with a direct train to Stratford to look for cheaper hotels. The London area has a huge number of hotels and the Olympics won't add that many extra tourists compared to an average summer. Good luck!

Yeah for real, pack a tarp and look for a grassy spot that's out of view of the authorities.

Most are booked. 3 Stars for $800-1200 per night. If you are serious, you should be able to do a week w/flight and non-finals venue tickets for around $15,000 a person. If you do some surfing, venue tickets for the 100m,1500m finals are going for $5000-$15,000 each from re-sale agents.

Try student halls. eg these at UCL, prices around £40:

Course it may already be a little late.

Um, pretty sure he was just giving the price in euros, not saying he paid in them (as the above poster did with dollars). Was it that hard to figure out?

Why would someone (and admittedly I'm making the assumption this person is not European, therefore does not usually 'operate' in euros) quote a price that wasn't a) their own currency, or b) the currency of where they quoting?
