Ran across this article about the Ethiopian 10,000M and 5,0000N team to be established in a race in Belgium and Paris. http://nz.sports.yahoo.com/news/article/-/14137110/bekele-leads-ethiopians-bid-olympic-berths/ Towards the bottom of the article there was a couple eyebrow raising paragraphs. Jeilan says he wasn't doing any training for 6 months and only started back up in May but says he expects to run under 27 minutes. It then says that running under 27 is required to make the Ethiopian team. That strikes is me as insane both the idea that Jeilan could run under 27 after being out so long and that the minimum requirement to make the team is 27 flat. |

Have you ever watched a 10k with Ethiopians. To make the team you must compete with BOTH Bekeles, Merga, Geb Geb and others. Jeilan should be in sub 27 shape and that is not much of a surprize after he beat Mo who was in 26:40 shape. |

I'll cut and past the relevant passage because I don't think you read it: -------------------------------------------------------- Ibrahim Jeilan, who will be racing the 10,000m in Liege on Thursday, said he has high hopes for his teammates, both at this week's qualifying races and at the Olympic games. He said he was prepared for his upcoming race, despite being out of training for six months due to an injury. He hurt a tendon and only started training in May, which he said could affect his performance. "I don't have endurance, I haven't put in endurance training, that may be my problem in my race," he said, adding that mentally he feels ready to run and expects to come in under 27 minutes, required to qualify for the Olympic team. "I'm feeling better, I am ready for this race, but one week ago I was disturbed, I was worried about injury and about risk. Now I am ready now, I am feeling free now," he said. ------------------------------------------------------- You think Jeilan should be in sub 27 shape after 6 months of not training at all and only getting back into it in May? I don't think so. But yes I have watched Ethiopians race and only because of that I think it may be in the realm of possibility. But even from those high standards I don't think so. I'm not clear on the sub 27 requirement it alludes to. Again, even by Ethiopian standards that is a very high bar if it just means the last year or so. If nothing else there simply isn't that many 10K races that are run in a given year and even the best Ethiopians need some reasonably good conditions and pacing. You can be a truly great runner and never go sub 27. In fact I don't think Jeilan ever has run sub 27 despite being world champion and I suspect that requirement is for him to have that lifetime PB. -------------------------------------------

Well, it looks like you were right, since he just dropped out of a race that was way off 27:00 pace: http://www.timetronics.be/results/luik2012/event027h01.html |

Thanks for posting the result, I've started another thread looking for it, obviously I didn't try hard enough. |

This year, 4 Ethiopians have run between 27:02 and 27:03 (quite a small window). He is basically going to have to run under 27 to make the team. He could run 27:01 and have the top Ethiopian time. But these guys raced against each other in Birmingham and also some in Hengelo. For Jeilan to make the team without racing them head to head he has make a statement. i.e. go under 27. I think the two Bekeles have secured spots on the team. Tariku won Hengelo and was second in Birmingham. Sihine was 3rd and 4th in those races. He lost to Desisa in Hengelo and Geb Geb in Birmingham. No one clearly has that third spot. If Jeilan runs 27:02 and PR's he still may not get selected. I don't see how he runs that fast without fitness, anyway. |

Thanks. That makes sense about the sub 27 performance he was 'required' to make. I take it that isn't actually any official standard Ethiopia requires. It seems like this Desisa is making a pretty strong case for the 3rd spot.

And he dropped out so he will not be in the Olympics. Bad year for Jeilan could mean good year for Farah. |

I think Jeilan is saying what he feels he needs to say, but it does not mean he is actually in sub-27 shape. |
