Shut Up USA Male 800m runners- Symmonds & Robinson- talking about running for Olympic GOLD- WTH? 7/4/2012 1:20PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
First Mr. Symmonds and now Mr. Robinson the 1st and 2nd place finisher at the 2012 US Olympic Trials in the 800m are talking about running for 800m Olympic Gold. I know elite runners are supposed to be confident and aspire to be the best but DO THEY REALLY think they can beat David Rudisha without him giving the race away?

EXACTLY How delusional are our top two male 800m runners to think they have a chance for Olympic Gold if David Rudisha runs his best or near his best?

Hmm, must be because Rudisha was so dominate in 2008.

I don't even think Robinson has made an international final (in his 10+ years competing) before.

Agassi and o.

There is one thing to be confident and another thing to be stupid. Rudisha doesn't have to run his best to beat Robinson or Symmonds!

David Rudisha is definitely a different beast since 2010 then he was in 2008 or do your stupidity prevent you from comprehending David Rudisha's dominance the last three years?

Wouldn't it be more sensible to my goal is to medal, because only way Rudisha doesn't win Gold:

1.) He gets injuried before or during the Olympics
2.) He get food poisoning during the Olympics
3.) He fails during qualiying or the final

other then that he's probably the BIGGEST FAVORITE to win his event behind Ashton Eaton in the decathlon!

Robinson has always been a solid competitor, and has even been world ranked in the 800. Yet, another reason not to be surprised Andrews did not make the team. If I am not mistakened Robinson has been under 1:44 numerous times.

Stop talking out the side of your neck...everyone knows that the Gold medal in the men's 800m, men's decathlon, and the women's 10000m already have David Rudisha, Ashton Eaton, and Tirunesh Dibaba's names already on them. David Rudisha has run more sub 1:42.90 then Symmonds and Robinson has sub 1:43.99 combined!!!!!!!

The only way those athletes don't win the Gold is injury, illness, more then one BIG tactical mistakes, or they fall!

As far as I know, Juantorena in 1976 was the last man to hold the 800m world record and also grab the gold medal at the Olympics (actually got both the gold and the WR in the same race).

It's true that Rudisha is absolutely dominant. But the fact this race has not gone to the WR holder in a long time speaks to the unpredictability and depth of competitiveness in this event.

My money is on Rudisha, but him getting less than gold isn't as crazy as some might think.

Look at 2008 when the favorites didn't even make the final. With Borz and Kaki both flaming out in the semis. You get into one of those races when they hit 400ms in 55s and anything can happen

Yeah, it's so much better when out athletes are "just happy to make the team" and/or look forward to "a learning experience" or some other crap like that.

If our athletes aren't aspiring to a gold medal I'd rather they just stay home.

Pretty sure Robinson has Only run under 1:44 once and that was back in 06. Nick was gone under since 2009 at least once a year, one year twice. I'm expecting a big, and long overdue, pr from symmonds. The man has been due to run under 1:43.6 since 2010. He's also consistent and been on a Galen rupp progression his whole career, having made two world finals. Kd has not made one final or been close to one. He's a solid competitor on the us scene but he can't hold it together on the European circuit and abandons sensible tactics in international championships (see daegu qualifying, ran from the back at usas but as soon as he got over to Europe he went back to his old front running tactics that got him left off the Beijing team. ) he seems to peak at usas to make the team and anything else is gravy, the man needs the team appearances to pay the bills.

Symmonds is the only 800 guy who can say that and be taken remotely seriously. Kd is just off his rocker with that comment. That being said, unless nick runs mid to low 1:42 before the games he isn't going to come close to gold. He is a bit of a medal threat but other than that I say the absolute highest he gets ( and it's a big if) is silver. I see him nippIng bronze but not much else. I hope I'm proven wrong though.

Symmonds & Robinson - talking about running for Olympic GOLD - WTH?

No balls, no blue chips.

The only way those athletes (Rudisha, Eaton, Dibaba) don't win the Gold is injury, illness, more then (sic) one BIG tactical mistakes (sic), or they fall!

So ... you're tellin' me there's a chance!

First of all you have to believe that you can do it, I can't think of a single gold medalist who stated afterward that they didn't believe they could do it. Second of all the 800 is really the one event that anything can happen so don't be surprised if the favorite doesn't win. Third of all Symmonds looked pretty chill running a 1:43, I don't know if he can win but I wouldn't count him out.

Cut the crap

with you gotta believe you could do it...when Kenenisa was healthy did anyone have a chance when won 5 straight short and long World Cross country titles? That's Rudisha dominance in the 800m right now!

Rudisha has lost ONLY one 800m in the last two plus years and over 22 races. He's even better now in 2012 then when he was AOY in 2010, oh yeah he's was also AOY in 2011 by T&FN.

Athletes should believe in themselves (but they should als be realistic) but who REALLY has a chance for Oly Gold if Rudisha runs like he is capable and has been for the last two years?????
Has to be said
