The Mist. My vote may be influenced by the fact I read the short story by Stephen King, so I thought I knew the ending. Then when they did a 180 with the movie ending, it blew me away. |

C'mon people... 1) Citizen Kane or the ending facsimile Raiders of the Lost Arc or 2) All Quiet on the Western Front. I know I'm going back in movie history, but great endings can make a movie (I can't believe I stayed awake for the whole Citizen Kane) |

In keeping with the holiday tomorrow, "The deer hunter". But my all time favorite ending is the original "True Grit" with John Wayne. Yes, I'm an old fart. |

On the Waterfront ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nN8-dbQaSEA ) High Noon ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZil728hUy0 ) I admit these two, esp. the latter, are much more effective if you see the whole buildup. Plus the classic twist: Planet of the Apes ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muEnLlycOn4 ) |

That was THE most depressing ending of all time. If anyone here hasn't seen this movie, imagine the saddest most depressing ending you can possibly think of and then multiple it by a hundred. If you haven't seen the movie you're probably thinking "oh so everybody dies at the end" but no it's so much worse than that. |
