Raw eggs, whey protein, egg whites, or hard-boiled eggs. What's best? 7/3/2012 12:50PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Let's say a runner doesn't get nearly enough protein, riboflavin, and other related things through diet. I read that raw eggs and whey protein are the only decent ways to ingest glutamyl-cysteine. What do you think is the best way to go about adding these to a diet? Are there pros and cons to one way versus another, especially for a runner? Thanks.

Salmonella is not your friend. Unless you like peeing out your butthole, stay away from raw eggs. The risk isn't worth it.

I'll tell you what I know. Some may help, some may not:

Egg whites are better than regular (raw or hard-boilded) eggs, because the whites have all the good stuff, and basically zero bad stuff (no cholesterol, etc..).

(Disclaimer on below: I am just now learning this protein stuff. I'd DEFINITELY ask others as well, as again, I am a beginner on proteins...)...

Whey protein is apparently what the body-builders most frequently use. It's also the protein used to recover the muscles after a hard lifting workout. From what I understand, Casein protein is a time-release protein. In other words, Whey is fueled into the muscles within an hour. Casein is put in little-by-little over 6-7 hours time. Therefore, Casein is most ideal to consume before bed (or when you won't be eating anything for hours). It keeps the body from losing muscle mass and also provides it some nutrition during that time. But it's not the optimum "build serious mass" protein, that whey is.

Casein is said to be contained in dairy products. The greek yogurts apparently have these in abudance. Just check the protein levels. 1 serving should contain minimum 10 grams protein. Some have 23 grams.

I agree! The yolk is the good part. It is better runny too.

I love eggs!

Whey is probably good to have combined with carbs after a fast interval workout. If you can digest it that is.

One egg yolk has 210mg cholesterol. Egg whites have 0.

One egg yolk has 4.51 grams of fat. One Egg white has 0.06.

One egg yolk has 1.6 grams of sat.fat. Egg whites have 0.

Egg yolks do have calcium, vitamin D and folate. But when you immerse it with cholesterol, fat & saturated fat... then it's best to look elsewhere for those nutrients. Egg whites have 17% sodium per serving... and that's the ONLY thing that's (kinda) not good about it.

So what you are saying is that egg yolks have all of the nutrients, yet you want people to eat only the egg whites? What's the point (other than good protein with few calories)? Besides, you NEED fat in your diet. Egg the yolks.

Sorry you are misinformed ttc. Saturated fat is fine for you, the fat that should be avoided are man-made unnatural vegetable oils. Eggs are real food, and should be enjoyed with the yolk, where almost all of the nutrition is found.

Eat the whole egg cooked. Don't worry about the cholesterol. What the body makes from transfats is the major cholesterol problem.

Eggs are great food. Poached or hardboiled are the healthiest.

No, you're misinformed. ***The correct method is getting vitamins & nutrients from good sources, ***that lack serious drawbacks, like cholesterol. Yolks are FULL of cholesterol & fats. Even candy bars have some nutrients- but don't eat them. Get those nutrients elsewhere. Get nutrition w/o drawbacks- we have too many nutritional choices to get our vitamins from high-cholesterol sources. With your method, one could eat red meat daily for protein & iron. My method gets protein from leaner sources, and other vitamins from fruits, vegetables, oatmeal, organic yogurt, etc..

In other words- you can get nutrients from many sources. So don't get them from crap. And cholesterol is crap. Note your dietary nutrients and note your dietary crap. If you have cholesterol for a vitamin source, ***then find one of the many other sources to get the same nutrients.

Never eat raw eggs. Its not food poisoning, its your body won't digest the protein. Its a waste. You have to cook eggs. Always.

You are grossly misinformed. Cholesterols is the precursor to many hormones including testosterone.

You also might want to do a little research about the first "studies" which created the phat-phobia and fallacy regarding saturated fats.
You're aware them too of how researchers such as Ansel Keys omitted data from his studies which would have disproved his conclusion regarding fat intake and correlation to heart disease???

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/10/22/debunking-the-science-behind-lowering-cholesterol-levels.aspx

http://www.marksdailyapple.com/saturated-fat-healthy/#axzz1ziyLCqwX

A great number of athletes, especially endurance, have such screwed up hormonal profiles because of fat-phobia. Along with meat (with accompanying fat), poultry, fish, vegetables, fruit; additional fats from organic butters, avocado, coconut butter/oil, and nuts or nut butters should be used as liberally as necessary.

Where our arteries get screwed up is in eating terrible meats, unhealthy non-organic fats which cause micro-trauma to the lining of arteries, causing the ensuing plaque buildup...as the cholesterol attempts to heal the damage! It is not saturated fat just lodging like a clogged drainpipe.

Want another mind blower...approx. 75% of cholesterol in your body is produced in your own liver!!!
