This is it for Galen, as he will not exactly be an old man among youngsters in London, but he'll be older than most in his respective races. Now is the time to strike, while the iron is hot, and nab that 5th spot in the 10,000m. I have confidence in Galen. |

If he'd only have been born in Eldoret he could be running for Christian Brothers Academy right now. |

lailwah - you're a bitch. age is less a determinant of performance than it ever has been. even if counting in e.africant years... |

This is simply NOT true. You're one of those morons who believes that 40 is the new 30. What a dunce. |

USA has a 40 year-old on the team that is 40 (Derek Miles) because there aren't enough people in the OT with the A standard. But keep in mind that Lagat isn't in 3:26 shape any more. If he was, Rupp would have really no chance against him. All of the top guys (Lagat, El Guerrouj, Geb, Bekele, Komen...) ran their best times in their primary event in the 20-26 age range. It's not that age has no effect, but extreme high level athletes like Lagat and Geb can have kind of a sliding scale. |

Well whatever, but young doesn't necessarily mean 'will improve'. It could mean 'not yet begun cycle of injury, rest, rehab, tentative return to racing, approaching good form, injury (and repeat 2 or 3 times) - retire.' |

eh. I think race time temperature in Brazil will be a bigger problem for him than age in 2016. At least for the 10,000. At 5,000M he may have lost some speed. Expect Rupp to be like Lagat. He will keep his mileage lower but his training will be smart and high quality. He will be elite until age 38 in the marathon. |

Shut up moronic impersonator, Galen Rupp is no Kenenisa Bekele. When all is said and done, Bekele will have a 10,000m pb that is 31 seconds faster than Rupp, a 5000m pb that is at least 18 seconds faster than Rupp, and multiple gold medals at WC and Olympics compared to ZERO medals for Rupp. Bekele is past his prime but his prime was the best in the world. Rupp is in his prime and that is short of medal caliber, so as Galen will be past his prime in 4 years, he'll be lucky to make the Olympics at all. |

Rupp will be one of the older runners there? This has the potential to be the most accurate prediction you've made so far! Of course, there is always the chance that a number of Africans are actually older than they claim (classic Letsrun). Also we can't forget that Lagat, Farah, and Bekele are all at least 3 years older than Rupp. If Rupp can stay injury-free, I see no reason why he can't stay competitive in four years, he'll only be 29. Heck, even Teg could probably still run a low-27 and he's over 30/didn't train for 10K earlier. With all the technology (and some would argue, drugs) the Oregon Project has available, I doubt age is a significant limiting factor. |

If Galen's main competition is Bekele and Farah, then the premise of this thread is incorrect. However, the bulk of the competition will be younger. Rupp is likely just hitting his prime. If this wasn't an Olympic year, I bet we'd see him lower his PRs to the 12:50 +/- and 26:30-35 range. I think he still has a couple more years on the track before he moves to the marathon, but I would be shocked if he wasn't focusing on the marathon in 2016. |
