Please, please, please - someone get through to Jeneba Tarmoh and her agent and coach and DO NOT LET HER PARTICIPATE IN THE USATF FARCE RUN-OFF.
Look at this quote from an SI article by Tim Layden, who along with LetsRun has probably done more in-depth reporting on this than anyone:
"This decision was really hard for me to make. I was pushed into a corner. They said if you don't make a decision, you give your spot up. I work too hard to just give my spot up. I had to say it was a runoff."
Tarmoh is CLEARLY being bullied into this. As a relatively inexperienced runner with a 100/200 background, she as at a HUGE disadvantage going against Allyson Felix, who is very experienced with doubling, rounds, and has the strength of a 200/400 background.
The trials for the 100 is not "run three rounds of the 100, then three rounds of the 200, then an arbitrarily added-on extra 100 after the meet is over." It is a 100, in which Tarmoh tied for third. (Actually, she was called as the WINNER, before NON-TIMING staff overturned the decision.)
Tarmoh has SO MUCH TO LOSE doing this. For USATF to tell her SHE WILL LOSE HER SPOT if she doesn't go along with some made up on-the-fly scheme is DISGUSTING. This isn't the 70s, when officials could decide in the back room and athletes had no access to the media. Reporters like Layden, sites like LetsRun, and social media are all over these bureaucrats, helping people like Genevieve LaCaze to deal with the garbage their federations pull.
DO NOT CAVE IN TO THIS, JENEBA. I don't know you, but you deserve that spot and to pursue the Olympic dream you earned. USATF gave you a victory lap and a press conference as an Olympian, and are now trying to get a little exposure for the sport and look clean as they fix their own mess. But this is DIRTY. THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOU.
DO. NOT. RUN.
