Let me think - isn't the current world champion and Olympic champion sort of tall |

Hello? Get a clue. Wheating's height has nothing to do with anything. He does NOT have to run the race in lane two or do anything else differently than runners who are 5' 10". Just man up and take the position you want. Hold your damned ground, and stop being an idiot. Spend a week watching videos of Lagat and Centro. That's how you run a 1500. Then go out and do it and stop with this "Oh, I'm taller than everyone else so I can't establish my position and run with intelligent tactics. Poor me. Poor me." JFMC! |

You must be short :-) It is most certainly a problem in a bunched up field to have a stride as long as wheatings. That is simply physics. A disadvantage is simply that, it's not an excuse but something you have to overcome. Centro has a shuffle and can slip in and out of anything. Maybe Wheating needs to run with a bit of an edge and elbows next season and earn a reputation. That may make people stay away from him rather than the other way around. Maybe he's too polite. |

Har, har. To be fair, he did run smarter today, he moved up when he needed to, and he got out of being boxed when he needed to. The goal today was to make the team, and with 120 to go, there was little doubt that anyone was going to out kick him to make the team. |

okay, fine, shorten up the stride until the last lap. |

He does that already. I think he's just got to run faster, and be willing to use his hands and elbows like Kiprop. We certainly don't want him running like Jim Ryun. (Hitting the deck). |

Good god almighty some of you people are stupid! |

The difference between him and a 5'10 runner isn't just the amount of space he takes up. Weight increases exponentially with height, given similar proportion. This makes it all the more important to maintain an even rate of speed and not accelerate unless you can maintain velocity. Consider also that even in a time trial he's probably a tad large in build for the 1500. So he just doesn't have as much energy to spend on tactics. Could he run a more gutsy race? So could a lot of runners. Should he do more to improve his aerobic condition? Probably. Are tactics the same for him as Centrowitz and Manzano? No. |

He ran a horrible race. Those of us watching the live feed were sure he wouldn't make the team with a lap to go. Malmo typed "Wheating is f%$cked" with about 350 to go. It was a miracle that he somehow made it through the 3 lane wide wall of bodies in front of him and moved up. The camera wasn't on him when he broke through, but it is truly amazing that he busted through. There was certainly some luck involved. Wheating did almost everything possible to be left off the team. He made the team because he is much faster than everyone other than Leo and Centro and was therefore able to get away with an awful race. |

While he was not as perfect in his covering moves and positions as Centrowitz, he was more responsive early on in the race than usual. And he was going to get out of that box one way or another -- he was NOT going to be denied making this team. I wasn't going to worry about him until 250 to go...and by then he was in position to unleash his kick and make the top three. He talked earlier in the season about learning to run for the top three if needed, to make the team...as opposed to running FTW. This may have had to do with realism about his post injury fitness, and the plain fact that in this meet, all that really matters is Top Three. You could tell by the post race interview that he was, as they all were, simply pleased to make the team. 3rd's as good as first here. In a normal NC year with no WC's in the line, getting third might not be so happy... |

This level of physics illiteracy is embarrassing. The relationship between weight and height is cubic, and what is this rubbish about not accelerating until you can maintain velocity? It's a miracle people like you can tie their shoes in the morning. |

Um, most professional athletics have contracts that reward them on where they place, olympic trials included. I'm sure he was delighted to just make the team but he would have had a bigger payday if he finished first or second. |

Last time I saw him he was not a good example of knowing how to run with his tall frame (on the ground at the Olympics). |
