Rupp and Pre 6/30/2012 6:32PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
A person on Twitter just said Rupp was the new Pre.

Can anyone see any resemblance of this besides being born in Oregon and attending the same college or being fast?

There have been many "new Pre's."

We're all just the first and only one of us.

Rupp is the first Rupp.

Rupp is Rupp. I know people still talk about Pre but there are better runners in US history. Shorter,Schul,Mills, and Ryun to name a few.

No resemblance. Pre was a more fearsome competitor but had none of the advantages that Rupp enjoys. Rupp is better trained and should be since he has the advantages of the best facilities and training system in the world. Pre was living out of trailer, living off pizza, pretzels, fruit loops, and beer, and constantly having to fight with the AAU. Pretty shitty life actually.

It's probably just an allusion to the fact that Rupp broke Pre's OT 5k record. What I find most amazing, though, is the fact that it took this long for it to happen.

Pre was much better than Shorter and probably would have remained so. But, yes, Rupp is the 1st Rupp, and not the 2nd Pre, if anything Pre was the forerunner of Rupp.

That's what I was thinking - someone who can lead a race and still kick it in.

Maybe Rupp should grow one of those mustache-less beards!

( ...yeah, who are we kidding - Rupp may never be able to grow facial hair ...)

Would Pre have been patient enough though to have taken the advice such as that which Salazar is giving his athletes with spacing out of workouts, water-treadmill, weight training, or even running an HM?

There are old posts here by a former UofO Runner Knut Kvalheim. I think he had shared that Pre used to laugh at Knut's training- longer long runs, long tempos as opposed to more hard intervals all the time. Laughed at Knut's training as that of a marathoner to paraphrase.

Maybe I'm mistaken without searching to confirm but I think that about a year before Pre died, Knut already had a faster 5K p.r.

So, bottom line is would Pre have tried other methods or done the extras that Rupp and the like do today.

Wasn't Pre essentially self-coached after he used up his collegiate eligibility? Were Bowerman/Dellinger still setting up his workout regime?

Shorter was better than Pre and had a gold medal to back it up. Shorter was a great marathoner who could throw down with Pre in the 5000 even though Pre specialized in the 5000. Pre was a fan favorite and a great guy but I sometimes think people idolize him too much and think of him as better than he really was.

Pre held every AR from 2k to 10k on the track. If anything he is underrated.
