THERE WILL BE NO RUN-OFF 6/25/2012 9:51AM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
No way, no how. This will be a backroom deal between their agents (Coach Kersee practically came out & said it last night on NBC during the interview). No run-off. No coin toss. This will all be about the $$$. I believe Tarmoh gives up the spot 'voluntarily' as Felix has more to gain by the increased exposure over in London what with all her endorsements. Bummer.

No he didn't. He said they should wait until after the 200 to decide what to do so that both athletes don't have added stress during that event.

It would seem to me that Tarmoh has MUCH more to gain by going to London. Felix isn't going to suddenly explode onto the scene and have everyone know who she is because she's already a fairly recognizable athlete to Olympic viewers. But what if Tomrah goes there and medals. She goes from being an unknown to suddenly getting way more endorsements, exposure, etc.

Doubt it. That Olympics slot is worth tens of thousands of dollars to whomever gets it.

Yeah, if anyone is going to voluntarily give up her spot it would be Felix. She is a virtual lock in the 200. She should probably just decide to focus on that. She'll likely be on the 4x1 and 4x4 teams. She's going to the Olympics, without a doubt. The only reason she still wants this chance is if disaster strikes in the 200. Tarmoh isn't famous and doesn't have the big endorsement deals so she probably needs the Olympic berth to get her big bonus.

Kersee has repeatedly stated that he can't favor any one solution that might benefit one or the other. BUT he doesn't want a decision before the 200 and that stance alone favors Felix.

Felix is a heavy favorite to make the team in the 200. By delaying the decision she has enough time to make sure she's on the team in the 200. She may decide that she only wants to contest the 100 if she somehow misses the 200.

Employee 1.1 or whoever it is seems to think that it's weird that the default is a runoff. But it has to be that way in case of an injury in the 200. If Felix pulls a hamstring in the 200 and misses the team then she would also be unable to do a runoff. If the default were a coin toss then the injured athlete's chances would still be 50/50.

Felix will give up her chance to run in the 100 after she qualifies in the 200. As previously posted she will still vie for three medals and her gesture toward her teammate will earn her chariots of fire points.

There are significant dollars involved in winning your event to represent the U.S. That will have to be worked out by the sponsors and the athletes involved..

Very unlikely that she voluntarily steps aside.

I'm sure her endorsement contracts have clauses for bonuses dependent upon which/how many events she qualifies for. If she is not running in the 100m at the Olympics (an especially widely-watched event), then she is not representing them in that event. Why would they pay her as much for less exposure?

Let's say for instance that she gets $50,000 bonus for running the 100m. Do you think she is going to give up $50,000 for her friend/teammate?

Would you give up an annual performance bonus to your colleague if they matched your performance at work?

I don't think so.

They should both have their agents negotiate some incentives to do the run off. The could decide ahead of time who wins, but still run the race. NBC could turn this into a nice event from a financial standpoint.

Here's my prophecy: if Felix chooses to defer her spot to the other, less hot chick, (I can't even remember her name), then Felix will not win the 200 in London. This move would demonstrate that she's not a killer. If she chooses to do the run off, regardless the result, she wins the 200 in London.

Quite possibly one of the dumbest things I've ever read on here.

How does waiting until after the 200 to decide do anything to diminish the stress they experience during the event? Won't the uncertainty be worse than even knowing that you did or didn't make it?

An extra 100m event after 3 high-pressure 100s already and prior to 3 high-pressure 200s in 3 days does not improve odds of making the team in the 200. Hard to believe that people who act like they run don't get that.

As far as someone "pulling rank" on Tarmoh, the one I'd be concerned about if I was Tarmoh would be Nike. They sponsor both athletes, and Allyson is clearly their poster girl this year.

Tarmoh just had a significant PB to qualify and it was a bad race for Allyson, so Tarmoh might not be close in a runoff. In that case, Nike might go for it to get additional exposure. But, clearly, Nike is in position to pressure Tarmoh to do what they want.
Question!

If it was about the money, there would be a runoff.

That's what I'm talkin about. No run-off, no coin toss. Agents, $$$$, Nike, decide this one, sorry to say. I'm here at the Trials & would pee my pants to see a run-off Sunday night, but alas it's not gonna happen. No how, No way!

A runoff would be a golden opportunity for the sport. Don't you understand anything about marketing?

Then posters here complain that there aren't enough people interested in the sport.

Completely clueless, Felix wouldn't have run the 100 if she didn't want to compete in London in the event. She'll take the run-off knowing she's better than Taroh (sp?) on most days.

....of course it would be a golden opportunity for the sport. That's whats gonna make this especially ugly. Personal greed if you will, will trump the 'greater good'. Nike & the agents will be doing what's best for them & that's to pay off Tarmoh to give up the spot to Felix (who I love by the way)....No Hollywood ending here with a Sunday night run-off as the sun sets over Heyward

I can't shake the thought that Jeneba Tarmoh is going to get screwed before this is all over. Felix seems to be everybody's "darling" and I feel the powers (aka Nike) will find a way to get her in regardless.

Or they are waiting for the drug tests to come back from the 100(specifically the top two).
