So athletes like Cam Levins and Dylan Armstrong with multiple of A+ standards need to "prove fitness" by finishing top 3 in the Canadian Trials next week. So what if the unthinkable happens:
- Armstrong fouls his first 3 throws
- Levins false starts OR gets food poisoning the night before

Would AC leave these guys home?

I like the American system where the top 3 amongst the A standards get go. Seems to make more sense.

So there would actually be trials only for the 100H...

Which is fine really. Yes, pretty stupid to leave an A at home because he false started or fouled out for some reason...

That being said, only the women 800 and 1500 could be an issue for the As. All other events (other than 100H) are virtual shoe ins for the As ( of course sprinters could always have a bad start ).

That's the same deal here... Rupp has "multiple of A+ standards". If he gets gets locked in a porta john right before the 10k, he doesn't go to the Olympics either.

If he gets food poisoning the night before, he'll appeal and it will be no problem. If he false-starts, that's a little trickier, but I imagine he'd still get through on appeal. If he runs and simply gets beaten (by three others), then the nightmare scenario ensues.

Still, as another poster points out, it's an easier (and less subject to last-minute disasters) road than Americans have. If anyone, even a defending Olympic champ, gets food poisoning the night before, there's no appeal process whatsoever in the U.S. system. So in that sense, I'd say the Canadian system is MORE flexible and able to accommodate those scenarios than the American system.

Still, if I was a Canadian with A standard, I'd definitely be visiting my sports doctor and therapist this week to complain about that phantom niggle in my knee that's "interfering with my workouts," just to get it documented in case I need it.

Actually, you'd still have ther trials as a Last Chance for standard ... well, given it's in Calgary, a last chance for races 800m and under.

Ya, the top 3 criteria could be problematic for the 800 and 1500 for the women. What do you do if you're Elmore or Reid - you're winning the 1500m with 10m to go but you know you don't have standard. Do you put on the brakes and allow the girls with the standard to blow by so that you don't destroy their Olympic chances?

Athletics Canada's selection problem is... Athletics Canada.

They are almost as bad as the notorious Athletics Australia.
