After the Pre Classic, Salazar and Rupp huddled with Oregon Project strength coach David McHenry to take immediate corrective action. Salazar thought Rupp's upper body was too tight, making his form mechanically unsound. They came up with a series of exercises to improve Rupp's upper body flexibility and help him be more loose and relaxed while racing. "We made some big changes," Salazar said. "Now, I like the way his upper body looks in terms of relaxation. We made a huge, huge jump over 10 days. The change is amazing." http://www.oregonlive.com/trackandfield/index.ssf/2012/06/us_olympic_trials_galen_rupps.html Are you kidding me? The change is amazing, says Salazar. Since some of the fanboys think Rupp's effort at Pre showed he is in 12:50 shape, I guess these amazing changes mean Galen could run faster. The truth is Galen will NEVER run faster than 12:55, and Salazar is desperate to feel he is doing something meaningful. |

Guinea Pig's have to be feed. Their owner gets to select their diet. Supplements are necessary to healthy coats to grow. Otherwise the pigs tend to get gnarly. |

Unfortunately many coaches have this one shoe fits all approach. Salazar isn't that type of coach. Personally what is missing in track coaching 400/800 PR training which helps. What your 400 PR MATTERS. |

he took rupp from scratch and made him one of the top runners. what salazar did in developing rupp will someday be the thing all coaches do in developing their distance runners. in 20 years every high school distance runner will be sleeping in altitude tents, and using the highest technology to train with the least amount of injuries. salazar is a pioneer in developing runners. his training is basically gradual progression, and everyone knew of that a long time ago, but very few coaches actually practiced it, sticking with an athlete in good and bad times, as salazar has done with rupp from what age 14-15 until now age 26. sure coaches of the future can and will improve on salazars coaching and their will be more talented runners than rupp. but salazars contributions to distance running both as a competitor and coach will be important in the sports history. |

Actually, you do point out were Mr. Clavin loses his credibility: "11. Shalane Flanagan Has Bigger Balls Than Galen Rupp" All runners know that it is Lauren Fleshman who has bigger balls than Rupp." |

"I can name five guys who have beaten Galen over the years," Salazar said. "None of them are around now. I frankly believe it's because we have been very slow, progressive and gradual with his training." It's seems odd that Salazar feels the need to take a shot at either Schumacher, Solinsky or both. |

Since your predictions seem to be exactly the opposite of what ends up happening, do you think you could predict that there is absolutely no way that Rupp will set the world record in the Olympic final in about 1 month? |
| Clifford Clavin MD |

Of course I meant to write "It seems..." Since Galen Rupp is at his peak now, it is a bit unfair to compare him to some others who may be past theirs. I can guarantee you that in a couple years there will be runners who Galen is beating now who will then be defeating him. |

There is absolutely no way that Rupp will set the world record in the Olympic final in about 1 month. That's for multiple reasons. One is that the Olympic final is, I believe, 6 weeks from Saturday. Second, we all know that nobody in the world is currently capable of setting the world record in the 5000 or 10,000m and third, Galen Rupp has peaked and will NEVER run faster than 26:48 no matter how flexible Salazar gets Galen's upper body to be. |

Thanks for going ahead and doing it though, I doubt it really matters when you make your predictions. |

I know you are a sh!t stirrer. I really hate to even reply, but the truth is you're wrong and you know it. You have no idea what Rupp can do. And the fact remains that there are only a handful of American men who have run sub 13 in the 5000 and only one other under 27 in the 10000. I'm not sure what your beef is with Rupp and Salazar, but he is having a career in the sport that others dream of. AND, I'm sure your BS posts come out of your jealousy and not your being a student of the sport. So, with respect, STFU!!! |

So, with respect, STFU!!![/quote] You tell me I'm wrong about the obvious fact that Galen Rupp will NEVER run faster than 12:55, and as supporting evidence for your assertion you offer the facts which are already known regarding Galen being the 6th fastest 5000m performer in U.S. history and that he was the second U.S. performer to break 27 minutes. Wow, your idiocy is symptomatic of being a fanboy without powers of ratiocination. Yes, Galen is having a wonderful career in distance running. We agree on this, but Galen is now at his peak. He will not improve now, and that is why Salazar is grasping at straws, and I don't mean Galen's arms. |

Gradual progression is the key to long term development which is why so many struggle after being put through the American system. By the time a runner turns pro he will have gone through about 3 or 4 different coaches. That's 3 or 4 different training philosophies and 3 or 4 opportunities to get a jackwagon who doesn't know what he's doing. Plus, every step of the way the coach has his eye on that State title and not the athlete's long term development. It creates a habit of a runner putting everything on the here and now and being blind to the future. How can a runner adjust to focusing on one race 4 years from now after going through 8+ years of focusing on a race next month? American teenagers are dreaming of winning the state championship. Kenyan teenagers are dreaming of setting world records. |

You dont know if Galen is at his peak. And with all your self-proclaimed ratiocination you are resorting to a prediction about Rupp's future which is the lowest form of reason. Good luck with that, idiot. |

Old runner, you must not blame the messenger when the message is unpalatable. I am doing you a favor in teaching you the truth so that you can learn to accept it, assuming your maturity level will permit this. Galen is already a great runner, so the fact that he has peaked should be no impetus for outrage and despair for you. You should try to be as imperturbable as myself. A review lesson for the obtuse: Galen's ceiling: 3:34, 7:32, 12:55, 26:48 Not bad Galen, not bad at all. |

Old Runner I believe your right. Was at a running clinic about 10 days ago. Salazar, Galen, Centro Ritz and others put it on, Salazar said straight up that Galen is running around 110 miles a week with some pool. Mo on the other hand is 130 per and some 20 pool. Salazar said..Galen is not and will not be attempting Mo's work load per week as Galen is not ready for Mo's work load per week. They said well down the road Galen would go there. So I'm just saying seemed clear to me that the Oregon project does indeed have different training for Galen say two years from now. |

The problem for you is that your "obvious facts" and "unpalatable truths" are really bold, yet misinformed predictions that do not stand the test of time. Sure one day, Rupp will get old and start descending past his peak. Given the high frequency of your recent prediction failures, I wonder how many times will you revise your "truths" before then? |
| Clifford Clavin MD |
| ||
There has been no need to "revise" the truth, as I have been correct about Galen's ceiling all along. The few times I have been slightly off, such as when I said Galen would run close to 13 flat at Pre, and Galen ran 12:58.90, I was not stating that Galen would NEVER break 13, but rather that he would not on that day. Regarding Galen's ceiling, I have NEVER been wrong, and as disconcerting as it may be for the fanboys, I NEVER will be. I know more about Galen Rupp's ceiling than Salazar and anybody else who cares to differ. Galen can work on relaxing his upper body until he is blue in the face, and he still will never run faster than 3:34, 7:32, 12:55 and 26:48. Salazar is desperate to find areas of improvement, and that is all well and good, but it makes me think that even Salazar recognizes that Galen's days of improving on the track are in the rear view mirror. There is no shame in this. Let's celebrate Galen's achievements. |
