I don't get it. I have a lot of sympathy for the woman, but I just don't see how "someone was mean to you" translates into "you should be a millionaire."[/quote]

Its not the fact that "she should be a millionaire", its the fact that people are trying to make a point. I think its great people are donating money to her. What those kids did was awful and people are trying to show that.

I like the fund raising campaign on several levels -

it shows Ms Klein that she is not alone - apparently many victims of cruelty feel very lonely and abandoned. That 20,000+ people care enough to give her some money...hard to top that in terms of feeling good about your place in the world.

And also it is a slap to those kids, whom we all grew up with. It is a proof that the parents who turn the other way when their kids are bullies are wrong, and that the tables will turn.

As an aside, that is a great part of being an adult in NYC - it is like revenge of the nerds here. The serious people are the successful ones and the bullies and mean people are not here.

with a few exceptions.

I think it is great, too. What this does is show people who bully that the world does not think they are cool. Hopefully, these kids see what happened and figure it out.

What I expect will happen is that these kids will not figure it out until they are 20-25 years old, when introspection begins to take hold. They will feel sick about the video and wish it had never happened. They will sit up at night thinking about how they are too embarrassed to go to their hometown b/c of what they did when they were younger.

Why do I think this? Because I was a bully in middle school and high school and I still think about it at 33. I wasn't even that bad...

That's perfect that she's getting all that money. The kids specifically tried to belittle her by saying that she was poor, among other things.

I saw the parents of two of the kids. Not the best. One of the dads was very defensive and complaining about what was happening to HIS family.

Maybe not the dumbest bullies, but there are still a lot of bullies in corporate jobs, I believe.

Maybe they just see that there is an elderly woman who cannot make ends meet, so she takes a job that absolutely sucks, and gets abused there, so they feel the need to assist her. You know how it is. People do not want to give people stuff that they are not willing to work for, but when they see a poor person trying to make it, the assistance just naturally flows.

I might be wrong on this (I haven't really looked into it), but it seems that our only evidence that she is poor is the insults from the douchey kids.

I'm pretty sure it's not the case here, but I suspect it's only a matter of time before someone stages something like this in order to make money. Seeing this get 500k already has to be pretty enticing.

I agree that this women went through an awful onslaught of abuse. but Really, give her all that money? Why?

Yes, she probably should receive some time off. but i believe the school district would be responsible for that. What is taking a lavish vacation going to do?

I believe she should donate this money to the community she works and lives in. Why not give it to an anti-bullying foundation or use it to support extra-curricular activities such as sports, arts, and other activities kids can participate in. this would provide a positive outlet for the students and teach them important life skills and lessons... not to mention cut down on bullying in the community

I believe that this question has been answered multiple times already. It is not about the money. It is about thousands of people sending a message that "you are not alone" and "bullies suck".

Now please stop asking stupid questions. It is annoying.

In a lot of cases it's about redirecting rage. You might literally want to go find those kids and kill them, but instead you send $5 to that old lady and that calms you down a bit.

Yeah, idiot. Giving money is not about the money. What are you thinking?

It's about sending a message. This couldn't possibly be accomplished by writing a nice letter to the lady or anything like that. It can only be accomplished by sending money, which again, has nothing to do with money.

I really mean no offense when I say that you appear to be quite stupid.

How many people are taking notice of the fact that this woman is being sent hundreds of thousands of dollars? How much attention do you think would be brought to the positive anti-bullying message if she got lots of "nice letters".

Try thinking. It is also good for you.

Taking notice is only relevant if it results in some fundamental change. Prove that some fundamental change has occurred as a result of all this notice taking and I'll side with you.

Sending 5 bucks is basically a great big F*CK YOU to the bullies of the world.

If you think that "fundamental change" in a society occurs within the space of a few days on something like this then you are even more stupid than I thought.

Ok, well just let me know when the attention that the money has raised does result in some actual change and I will shift my position.

By the way, you're quite the bully yourself. No one else here is calling anyone stupid. Just you. Apparently the awareness raised by all of this hasn't even made you stop being a bully.

And before you feel the need to point it out, my use of the word "idiot" was obviously meant to be sarcastic.

isn't it more likely some change is to take place if the money goes to an organization or activities that can help promote change?

Yes, the money being given to this women is raising awareness that bullying is happening.

Is giving money to this women so she can go on a vacation and retire going to stop bullying in anyway? No.

If people want to raise half a million dollars then why not raise it for a program or organization that can actually stop bullying or at least do something positive for the community.
