The world record that Viren broke (27:38) was Ron Clarke's 27:39.4 (Clarke broke his previous record of 28:19 by 40 seconds) on July 14, 1965. That was over SEVEN YEARS before Viren broke the record by just ONE SECOND. And Clarke was running solo. I doubt Clarke was doping and there was always suspicion about Viren. |

Does anyone else tear up EVERY time you watch the B&W 1964 "Look at Mills! Look at Mills!" call? I'm not a crier, but damn, without fail, that footage gets me every time. It's like raw human spirit exposed for a brief glimpse. That finish was supernatural. |

One vote for the 10,000m world finals. Why? a) Last 5k in under 13 mins, one of the most impressive bits of running ever. b) It was the point when the challenger Bekele definitively overtook the Emperor Haile c) What teamwork! The ethiopian trio decimated the entire rest of the field. |
