My road bike was stolen today. Letsrun, I need some cheering up... 6/19/2012 7:55PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
I've had my 2000 Red Specialized S-works (top of the line) for over 3 years now. I've probably invested over $1000 into that thing. I loved that bike so damn much.

I live in DC. It got stolen while I was at the gym today after work. Funny thing is the bike rack is right INSIDE the building. I don't have a U-lock, but I locked it up with a massive cable one I have (like 1/2+" thick). I didn't think anything could cut through that, but sure enough, when I emerged from the gym, my cable lock was lying on the floor with a clean cut through it. When I told the gym staff, they said there was nothing they could do about it. It's not their fault, of course, but why the f@#$ didn't they have any cameras out there?

Anyway, sorry for the rant. This bike was a big part of my life, and some f@ckin @sshole just took it from me. I be watching craigslist, but I'm not getting my hopes up. I told the cops, but I'm sure they can't do anything. I guess this thread has no point if I don't ask a question or something, so... what should I do if I see it posted on Craigslist?

Thanks for listening.

Love to LRC.

Condolences on the bike being stolen, and having to live in the cesspool of DC. When you have criminals in city council, you know you've got problems in a place.

I know how you feel buddy.

At the end of fall semester my senior year of college, I looked out to see that my bike had fallen over during the night. I must have locked it up wrong. When I went outside to ride to class, it turned out my bike didn't fall over; instead, a car plowed into my bike in the middle of the night and completely annihilated the front wheel and fork. I rode that thing everywhere in college. We had some good times. I cried a little bit that day.

Instead of plowing a couple hundred bucks into replacement parts and repairs, I donated the remains to the local bike project and acquired a used BMX bike to tool around on the rest of the year. I spent my final semester of college doing jumps and tricks in parking lots. I didn't even need to lock up that piece of crap. I had fun.

as a runner and bike aficionado I can say I feel for you man. I know what it is like to have a high end bike you love that you took the time and put money into to make it perfect for you.

That being said, why in the hell would you take an expensive bike to the gym and leave it locked where you cant see it? I would never do that no matter if the rack were inside or outside and if i had a skinny cable lock or 15 different locks on it. Thats what you get a shit beater bike for. You had to figure that in D.C. it wasnt going to be safe.

I've never had a bike stolen, but it has always sounded so harsh. My brother lives in Philly and basically gave up on owning a bike (his only form of personal transportation) because they constantly got stolen. Worst part was, later on he'd see the kid who stole it but was too scared to do anything because they are all in gangs. Philly is a cesspool. Take three guesses as to which US city I have no interest in revisiting.

Sorry about the bike. I hope this helps cheer you up more than the guy above who just blamed you...

A guy with a broken hand goes to the doctor. He says "doc will I ever be able to play the piano?". The Doctor says "Sure". the guy says "That's great. I could never play before!".

Thanks for all the 'cheering,' especially that joke. I laughed.

The guy who blamed me is correct, in a sense. I probably should've known better than to think the bike was safe locked up there. It's in a great area, but it's a SUPER cheap gym. So you know what kind of people it attracts - poor, sketchy people. And my bike looked a little out of place there... although it is 12 years old, it looks like a slick road bike. I've just never even seen a cable as thick as mine (it's meant to lock up a motorcycle), and I naively thought it was uncuttable.

Still, it's a sad day when you're forced to blame yourself when some little piece of sh!t steals something that meant so much to you.

"If it meant so much to you, you should've kept it tucked away under your mattress."

Washington DC home of crackhead Marion Barry.

I'm sorry that some scumbag stole your bike.

I think it's safe to say it was an Obama supporter, not a Romney supporter who is the criminal.

They redistributed part of your hard earned wealth.

Lets hope that the thief is killed while he's riding it!

Once there was a young man in a tribe who fell off his horse and broke his arm. Everyone said how unlucky he was. Then another day there was a great battle in which every warrior in the tribe got killed. Then everybody said how lucky he was.

Well, there's a life lesson, at least: cable locks are worthless. Anyone with a big pair of bolt cutters can break through them. Good U-locks usually need to be cut with power tools, which is more obvious.
I think so

Can't you claim the bike (file a police report of course) on your renters/homeowners policy? That's how I got my new bike.

That's EXACTLY why I quit riding a road bike about 10 years ago. I would like to know the death rate of bicyclists since cell phones became common place.
