Amy Weissenbach never entered the Jr. Nats meet.

Lots of travel back and forth from LA to NY and back for Adidas, then LA to IN and back for Jr. Nats, then up to Eugene next week for the Trials.

All this travel may have affected Chapus, maybe the heat, maybe just a bad race. Maybe the CA State Meet - Adidas Dream Mile - Jr. Nats Champs triad was just too much.

Anyway, Amy's 2:02.04 from last year, while not an Oly Trials A (2:01.3), so well up on the list so she will be in
Eugene next week. Ajee Wilson (2:02.6) will likely make it while Mary Cain (2:03) -- as noted in this thread -- is close to the 32-runner cutoff.

The heat affected many athletes. It was 93 on the track and blazing sunshine.

Amazing that Hatton completed the 5000/1500 double (no other woman doubled in distance events in the heat). The 1500 final was just 18 hours after the 5000, Hatton on the podium for both. Great stuff!

Looks like there at least 35 women that have made the "A" Standard in the 1500, and Cain is almost two seconds off that standard. The 800 Trials may have a place for Cain. If so, Cain will have a shot at Mary Decker's soph 800 record of 2:02.29.
As I read IAAF age standards, Cain cannot compete in Spain. She was born in 1996 and I do not think she is old enough. She will make it on age for the World Youth Championships in 2013.
She must be 16 by 12/31/12. She turned 16 on May 3, 2012, so she qualifies on age. "Athletes aged 16 or 17 years on 31 December in the year of the competition (e.g. for the 2012 Championships, born in 1995 or 1996), may compete in any event." 303.2.2 http://www.iaaf.org/mm/Document/Competitions/TechnicalArea/05/44/75/20110131045402_httppostedfile_IAAF_Technical_Regulations_31January2011_23379.pdf

Wait so how did Hasay make it in 2008 with a 4:16.98???? Have times gotten that much faster since then?

are you sure you guys are not counting foreigners as well in whatever lists you have? If you're just looking at the NCAA rankings there are plenty of foreigners with fast marks...

It's the USATF status list, no foreigners: http://www.usatf.org/events/2012/OlympicTrials-TF/entry/status.asp I think she could use a break from the 1500.

there were athletes born in 1995 in the results of the 2011 world junior xc meet, so i think cain will be able to run world juniors july 10-15th 2012 with a birthdate in 1996.

look for a 4:10-4:12 for the precoscious emerging star mary cain, next month.

not necessarily tirunesh dibaba, meseret defar, lydia cheromei, worknesh kidane were all outstanding runners when they were mary cain's age and are still outstanding runners, heck lydia cheromei was world junior xc champion at age 13 and now OVER 20 years later she has one of the fastest marathons in the world THIS YEAR 2:21

i am hoping cain has that kind of longevity to go with her considerable ability.

Two things I noticed from the video..

Chapus was right with Cain at the bell lap.. Cain busted out 62-63 in that last lap like nothing and Chapus finished 18 seconds behind..

Cain stumbled and almost fell within 15 seconds of the race start. I would say that easily cost her a good second.

She is really making history. I predict 4:09-4:11 before the season is over.

A few notes:

- Beautiful stride, a real joy to watch
- She led the WHOLE race. She always does this...wonder if she'll use the same strategy at Worlds. might be good cause when she doesn't lead she tends to run in lanes 2 and 3 a ton.
- Roughly splits of 68, 2:19, 52ish for 300 and 62-63. She can close like nobody's business. Dropped Hatton and Chapus easy, and Chapus collapsed at the line.

People say 30 people ahead of her in the 800 but I only count 26. For the 1500 I only see 23 declared athletes ahead of her.

Her arm movement looked to be a little inefficient. Totally across her body most of the time.

It's getting *a little* better with maturity...scary to see what she can do with some upper body strength and good mechanics!
