He has the second fastest qualifying time...
Honestly... I think he could make it. Al says he won't run, though?
He'd win no question. It's too bad the USA isn't like other countries that will give byes to the athletes who clearly are untouchable and deserve to go to the Olympics, so now he has to jog a 28 minute final and run two 13:30's to secure his spot at the Olympics when he could be like Mo Farah at his trials where Mo Farah will do the 1500m as speedwork.
Yeah Rupp would win the 1500 no doubt. We call him Great White around here. He is untouchable!
Ha!
I wasn't trolling, so shut up. I think if the race went slow he'd be taught a lesson over the final 400.
Not to hijack the thread, but why do people treat Robby Andrews like the second coming of El G who has this monster kick and amazing 1500 ability when he lost to Rupp in the final straightaway?
He'd make the finals, finish top 7, perhaps top five, but not top three.
Because he came from way back and his last lap was 53...

There wasn't that big of a lesson taught here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k15xM84zvU4Second coming of El G? I wouldn't say so... people think that Hamzad Driouch would be the second coming of El G (3:50 flat full mile at age 17). But all the love for Andrews is because he's won an NCAA title with his monstrous kick, and because he's only recently turned pro so he has a lot of room for growth. No doubt that in our future he'll be one of our most promising milers.
I think Rupp would be on the team. Not sure if he wins. Even if it went out slow I think Rupp has a sustained kick from 600M out that all the American 1500M runners would find tough to handle.
Only Lagat, Wheating in his 3:30 shape (don't think he is), Centro in his bronze medal shape (may not be), could beat Rupp.
Oh and maybe Lomong, but other than that, don't think anybody could. So Rupp would probably finish 2nd or 3rd in Olympic Trials final.
Subtracting Lagat, he actually has the 6th fastest qualifying time.
He looked good at Oxy and would be in the mix.
Don't think he would really be able to sprint with the others.
I think Robby Andrews would have a field day on the last lap. There we go; Centro, Wheating, Andrews, and Rupp's off the team. Throw in Torrence, Manzano, and Lomong and it looks pretty bleak.
I could see him sneaking into 5th or 6th.
Nothing against him--there's a reason he's not a 1,500 runner.
Championship meets have heats, which give the advantage to the kickers. Rupp can run a single race off so-called "strength", but by the finals everyone is sub-par and the strength runners don't have the same aerobic strength to make up for a lack of kick.
I suspect that Rupp surprised Robby at Occidental and I doubt it would happen again. I'm picking Robby, Torrence, and Manzano in that order.
someone youtube this

like i said, the "wall" of andrews/mo prevented a "proper" sprint in the lat 200 for rupp
he was good for high-3'33 off even pace/no "wall"
( & i doubt he has done his speedwork in mid-May )
He would most likely make the team. He is definitely in 3:32 shape at best.

Is there anybody on Letsrun who has any understanding of this sport at all?
Anyone?

I don't think you understand what strength is. Rupp having superior aerobic ability would hardly be affected by prelims.
If Rupp were running the 1500, 5000, and 10000 I don't think he would make the 1500 team just because that's a lot of racing. But if he did the 10k and 1500 with rounds, I think he would have a great shot at making the team.
