How do I help my 25yr old brother get sober? 6/16/2012 9:24PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
My brother works around 65hrs a week, and he's responsible a for managing a lot of people. His job is provides plenty of stress stress. Two years ago he began drinking more frequently as a means to "cope with his stress". Since then his habit has gotten progressively worse to the point where he comes home stumbling on our front porch. I come from a single parent home and my mother's "nagging" has proven ineffective.

His bed is surrounded by about 15 empty heavy liquor bottles and its clear he has problems. For a while he spent every off day at home drinking throughout the day.

In the past 6 months though his drinking has become less frequent. He's what I'd call a "functioning alcoholic". He can does his job well but its still not doing any good for him

How can I help him?

Keep in mind, he doesn't take well to criticism and can be highly emotional.

Go to alanon. Google your towns name and alanon meetings and follow links.

My dad is an alcoholic. It took him smashing his teeth out on the steering wheel in a "driving drunk" incident a long time ago. He spent the night in jail and decided to go to alanon. He's been clean for over 30 years. Good luck to your brother.
wha huh?

He has to help himself and the cliche is true...he has to first admit he has a problem. It is more diffucult with " functional alcoholics" as they may never hit rock bottom to get the sense they have a problem. Sadly it may take his getting a dui or losing his job to make him realize this. Al-anon is worth a try but is not for everyone. I think you best bet if you want to sy something is to catch him at a really low moment and address your concerns or at a very sober moment. Approach it from a place of love and concern and he will be loss likelg to be defensive.

I have been recovering for 2.5 years. My mom would nag at me and it just made me mad and want to distance myself and keep drinking. My dad loved and supported me the entire time. He didnt approve of my choices but he stood by me through thick and thin. I quit drinking on new years day. my girlfriend was pregnant and I realized that I as going to have a baby and could not keep doing that. It was then that my son became more powerful than anything else in my life. Once that happened it was an easy choice to stop. It took me almost 10 years to reach that point though.

good luck

Have him check out gosober.org. I tried it all. This eliminated my constant thinking about drinking. They will help him deal with the stress also, after he's quit drinking. Good luck! Been there, done that and it sucks!
