in HS so long ago, our second time running on an indoor track, our second time running the medley relay, I was the 800... and miscounted laps. Bolted with 2 laps to go, wondering why I was so far ahead of the pack when I hear the jingle of the bell and knew I couldn't hold my lead....

My entire senior XC season. I didn't run a single race to my potential and subsequently quit. I'm trying to get back into it 6 years later and it's hard as all hell.
we have two to go.......oops

Had done a lot of training to indicate that I was in 15:00 5k shape and was really looking forward to a race specifically set up for people to run fast times. Hitting the mile in 4:46, I already felt a lot more tired than I should have and things only got worse from there. Got lapped by a kid I had regularly been beating (he ran 14:52 that day). My time was somewhere around 16:10, though I never bothered to look at the final results. What made it especially crushing was that my family and one of my friends had come to watch me try and crack 15. Oh, and the week before that I ran 31:44 in the 10k, hitting the 5000 in 15:33 en route.

Too many to mention. The two that come to mind were

1) My first ever marathon...I ran it in 4:03. My hamstrings completely locked up at the 19th mile and I nearly walked off the course. My dad and brother were at the race and I was almost too embarrassed to face them after I walked 4 or 5 miles to the finish in complete pain. To put this into perpecstive, I ran a 16:55 5K six weeks prior to the race with no taper, and a ran a 4:50 mile at a club meet that summer, which I think are respectable post-30 times.

2. 10 years ago, when I was much quicker, training for 6 months to break 16 in the 5K for the first time, only to blow up like the OP by going out way too hard and flopping at 17:01. I nearly threw my flats in a nearby garbage can after I crossed the finish line and dropped about 30 F-bombs on the ride home.

It's a tie between two races. My freshman year of college entering the xc conference meet we were heavily favored to win the team title. Although our top runner won the race, the rest of us had rough days. I personally wasn't even close to the guy my coach wanted me to beat. The second race was the conference meet 10k my junior year of college (my first and only collegiate track season). Before the season started my event coach wanted me to run mid to low 33's and maybe get top 3 in the conference. During the season my fitness didn't improve (maybe even declined) and by conference meet time we just wanted me to run low 34s. Well, I had a very bad day and ran 35:11 and only finished 6th!! That's the only time I ever openly cursed after a race. I pred in all 3 10ks I ever ran, despite feeling worse in each one.
