Sorry this is a few days late. I know many of my fans have been waiting for this post. 30 years ago a fairly obscure dude came out of nowhere and beat the world record by 6 seconds doing pretty much a solo effort. No second place exists in this category. David Moorcroft's 13 flat in Oslo in 1982 puts him in a league of his own when it comes to 5000 meter races. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t14lkaMAld0 The most competitive 5000 was the final of the 2004 Olympics in Athens when El G closed in 52 seconds to blow past Bekele in the last 50 meters. Two of the three best runners in the history of the sport in their prime duking it out. By the way...the 800 meter final in the same Olympics closed in 52 seconds. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9a78SssRsms I'll get the best 10,000 meter race up sometime this weekend. |

the most competitive 5000 might have been in Paris 2003 when Bekele and El G both got outkicked. |

If you're gonna do a best 3000m steeplechase, I'd like to put in a vote for 2003 world championships of Kemboi v. Cherono (Shaheen). Epic race. |

Slow by modern standards, but I've always loved the 88 Olympic 5000m: Ngugi, Castro, Baumann and the rest of them. What a brave race from the great cross-country man Ngugi, and what emotion at the finish: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ca9N-iqzXzA Baumann's race 4 years later was wonderful too, though later tainted by his failed drug test. |

Wow! Bekele looked like a different runner! Too young to remember him then but he looked thinner and had had quicker turn over. |

Moorcroft's record was certainly remarkable. However, I don't really think he was "fairly obscure" or "came out of nowhere" as you characterize it. He was a finalist in 1976 at the Olympics over 1500 (seventh, I think) and won the Commonwealth Games in 1978 (again over 1500) as well as a bronze in the European championships later that year. I think he was relatively new to the 5000, however. I agree that the Bouin/Kolehmainen duel was one of the best. However, I have only read of it and never seen it on film. The most exciting last lap of an elite 5000m that I have seen was from the 1952 Olympics. His grimace as he retakes the leaders embodies his fortitude and determination. As for women, anyone remember the last stretch between Sonia O'Sullivan and Szabo in 2000? |

1994 Commonwealth Games Final. 1988 Olympic Champ John Ngugi leads by 50m at the bell and gets chased down by Andrew Lloyd of Australia. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXV68wJw1Gc&feature=results_video&playnext=1&list=PL27E3F04CA1742F7E |

The 10,000 has to be Ron Clarke's July 14, 1965 27:39.4 WR. That is still an outstanding time today. |
