What's more challenging: Running a 2:50 marathon or walking a mountain 100-miler? 6/13/2012 9:20AM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Assume the marathon is run on the BAA course and the 100-miler is the Hardrock 100 in Colorado.

Both are impossible if you don't try.

This is going to get into the jog vs run debate, but I don't believe anyone has ever ran a 100 mile race, so you are comparing apples to oranges.

Haven't done the latter, but I think it would be way more challenging. Hardrock is pretty high and the ups and downs can be brutal...plus walking for 100 miles would take forever! If one could get roadside pizza delivery up there it might be bearable, but still...

Just the other day at a 10k. Everybody is chilling out at the start. Here comes a guy sporting his NorthFace 100k tshirt. His buddy is all excited. Oh you know he did it in 14 hours. I didnt know to laugh or cry. He sure is a tough guy though. He was about 38 min 10k not shabby for a guy who did a hundred a few weeks before. My choice mountain 100 miler. A nobody hobby jogger run 100k his time for marathon probably 2hr 50 min marathon.

Well, wouldn't that depend on the person?

A 2:50 marathon requires a certain level of fitness - which I do not have.

A 100-miler requires completion and doesn't have any time reference. 3 days? 4 days? Pizza delivery? That would be less difficult for me. I'm not sure if I could do it in a day, though.

Most people could not run a 2:50 marathon if you put a gun to their head. Most people could walk 100 miles eventually.

Or you could pay attention to the original post and read where he says the 100 miler is Hardrock.

Which one is more challenging? I would assume that 100 miles at that elevation over the better part of a day and a half (average finish time is 41 hours) is just plain tough. Running a 2:50 marathon is a different type of tough.

It's comparing apples to cars. I have no idea what that means, but I hate the expression of apples to oranges!

As hard as it may be for everyone to believe, there are cut-off times at these ultras. So just like someone may not be able to complete a marathon in 2:50, ultra people don't get to just "eventually" finish an event.

But you would agree that there is a difference between running it in 25 hours and running it in 50, wouldn't you?
2:50 is easier

Heck, walking a marathon would be harder than running a 2:50 marathon just because you'd be spending so much time on your feet if you walked. Much easier to just get the thing over with at a hard, but not crazy fast pace than to spend all day walking.
