Hamstring issues 6/11/2012 9:58AM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Hi all - I'm dealing with a nagging injury on the inside back of my left knee (hamstring tendon area. I have dealt with this issue about 2 years ago and they diagnosed it initially as a nerve issue, but the PT thought it was more likely tendonitis.

The issue doesn't really bother me when running, it's the night and day after that it is really sore and stiff.

Anyway, I have been trying to do the same treatment techniques for the past 3 months - (core strengthening exercises like 90 degree leg lifts on a ball, leg lifts, plank, etc.), also sticking to elliptical and cycling only -- but I don't seem to be getting better.

I decided to try running a slow 3 miles yesterday thinking I may be over it - but the aches and stiffness are back today worse than they have been in weeks. I iced and stretched quite a bit as well - but still having issues.

I'd love some recommendations on how I can best get rid of this. The elliptical doesn't seem to really bother my hamstring at all - and I don't want to stop all activity...but is this somehow maybe perpetuating the injury?

Thanks in advance

Sounds like it could be a slight over striding issue. This usually shows up in the tendon area rather than in the belly of the hamstring muscle itself. I have done a few things in the past that have worked well. They include jumping rope,(sounds counter intuitive but really seems to help). Chair walks (sit in a rolling office chair and using your heels pull yourself along by bending your leg, this will put a lot of strain on the hammy especially the tendon area so only do a few of these to start, and only do them on a flat smooth surface. Also single leg squats with no weight. I might also add that two weeks off is a good place to start. When you do start back running, work on not over striding or reaching your foot out in front of you.

Sorry to break it to you, but it sounds like you have aids.

@Awesome - thanks for the advice. Jump roping does sound counter intuitive but I will try it. I had been given the chair walk drill by my PT a while back...but had forgotten about it.

When you say 2 weeks off - is that just running? Is the elliptical okay? That doesn't seem to put any strain on my hamstring...also concerned with just going to zero activity.

Thanks again -
